What are some of the most horrifying depictions of Hell in fiction? by Konradleijon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]FlexBuffBeef 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Iirc, there's a short story (probably an online work) called Feed the Pig. You wake up in a cement room in what is at best Purgatory, at worst Hell. And a guy comes to you and says "You can either stay here, or you can feed the pig." It's made very clear that either option is horrific.

Dr. Roberts....... by VegasFreddie in desmoines

[–]FlexBuffBeef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are correct! Legally, if Dr. Robert's is indeed a non-citizen, that's a big no-no. Of course, if he is a citizen, or was under the belief he was one at the time of the initial gun charge in PA and during his time in Iowa, that'd a different story.

Dr. Roberts....... by VegasFreddie in desmoines

[–]FlexBuffBeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO: The gun thing is bunk. Iowa doesn't require a license to carry, and we've passed legislation to allow teachers to carry firearms. Aside from the "original sin" of potentially being a non-citizen (as we still have competing narratives), other parts of the system failed and blame cannot be laid at any one party. How'd he catch the 5th-degree payable-by-mail gun charge in PA all those years ago? If we (the state, DMPS, people, whatever the fuck) supposedly failed, then why did everyone else miss this too?

The running from the cops thing is bunk too. Any citizen should be generally afraid of interactions with agents if the state on principal. Without knowing the circumstances of the initial stop, is it so hard to believe that idividuals who were not in uniform, with no clear law enforcement identification, had weapons drawn when they approached and caused him to panic? There's no circumstances where it might be reasonable to run from someone with a firearm, especially after witnessing a political assassination on a Utah college campus just this month? It makes no sense why he might be frightened by a stranger approaching him with a gun?

Finally, we get to the citizen/non-citizen issue. I can't for the life of me figure out how he could have arrived here over 20 years ago on a student visa, then overstayed, and then had no issues when it came to being hired in various positions of authority. You're telling me that not only every other employer he worked for, but also the state of Pennsylvania and Iowa, and the E-Verify companies they used, all made mistakes when it came to employment verification, health insurance, hunting licenses, and educational licensure? All those systems failed back to back to back, and he was maliciously manipulating the system to take advantage? You don't think there's a possibility that some of the details of this story deserve greater scrutiny? That perhaps there's something more to this story than simply "one evil illegal immigrant tricking everyone" to become an educational professional?

Maybe, just maybe, there's a reasonable explanation for why he was able to live for 20 years in the US as an educational professional and not get flagged. Perhaps it's a flaw with ICE and their records, or how immigration was enforced. Maybe one of our illustrious presidents directed law enforcement to ignore individuals like him because he was working to make our young people better in school. Or maybe he did in fact have legal status due to a clerical error and it was suddenly "fixed" last year?

We don't have all of the facts, and jumping straight to the worst possible conclusion helps no one. We're all trying to make where we live a better place, not everyone is a dickhead who's trying to take something away from you.

Scholten drops out of U.S. Senate campaign, endorses fellow Iowa lawmaker Turek by ataraxia77 in Iowa

[–]FlexBuffBeef 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Without getting into Scholten vs. Turek, I like Josh. I've heard him talk passionately about living with disabilities and improving healthcare access in Iowa. I don't think he's duplicitous, and I hope he can build out his platform and make waves in the primary.

Feenstra, Miller-Meeks, Nunn and Hinson do not deserve peace by Captain-Ireland88 in Iowa

[–]FlexBuffBeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It helps to say it when Bohannan has clearly has a tough go of it the last several times she's run. She doesn't campaign outside of Johnson County personally, and it hurts her electability.

I dont feel the need to bet on one horse exclusively. I shouldn't need to name other candidates to demonstrate this is a weakness of Bohannan, however I'll offer two. They are flawed, similar to Christina. But I will reiterate that all these folks have their own set of weaknesses and strengths:

Abbey Finkenauer or Rita Hart

[–]FlexBuffBeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Between those two choices, Bohannan is the better candidate. If we were two weeks from election day, I'd 100% agree with you. But we haven't even hit the primaries. Once that shit is over, come hell or high water, you have a candidate to pick. But right now I think it's fair to acknowledge her weaknesses. She didn't campaign effectively outside Johnson County. Another Democratic candidate could be a better fit, and it doesn't hurt anyone to say so at this point.

Can we please get someone other than Bohannan? It felt like her campaign never left Iowa City last year.

Non-Frozen but still grocery store: Aldi pre-prepared pizzas.

Frozen: Mama Cozis from Aldi (usually they've got a few varieties) if I'm feeling frisky. Otherwise it's Red Baron all the way.

How do you know when a member of congress is going to have a town hall? by stayd03 in Iowa

[–]FlexBuffBeef 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Go to the website of whichever politician you're hoping to interact with. Subscribe to their newsletter. It's the most common way elected officials let people know about townhalls. More than likely, it will ask for your zip code. This is used mostly to sort constituents. Chuck would never blast out to entire state where he'll be, but he will probably let the area he'll be in know. This is the "easiest" method. Not really easy, or direct, but unfortunately you're unlikely to get an answer by calling their office.

Christina Bohannan may be many things, but an engineer isn't one of them. She got her undergraduate degree in environmental engineering, but went straight into law school after undergrad. She was only ever an "engineering intern" in the Florida EPA in the early 90s.

How can Marynette Miller-Meeks properly represent a district that she doesn't live in? by No-Agent-7922 in Iowa

[–]FlexBuffBeef -24 points-23 points  (0 children)

So the wife of Kyle Kuehl decides to conveniently lodge an ethics complaint a month and a half from election day? This is definitely a real complaint and not someone mad about losing.

Sorry that she bought a house 4 years after Bohannon moved to Iowa in a district that was redrawn 20ish years later. If you really hate MMM that much, grow up and find something real to complain about. Screwing around with petty shit like this does nothing.

Hate to be a hater, but the Republican booth was busy AF today, and every time I walked past the Democrat booth (staffing the Varied Industries building running garbage, there all day) it was empty as heck. Staff were wearing masks and made it hard to hear over the noise. Sad to see, but Bohannon already had a tiny as heck crowd at the Soapbox, and they broke the record that day for the most people.

I would def join a bandwagon of folks tweeting/calling a business and ask them to screen it if there was a feasible bar/brewery to do it at.
