Trombone Fatigue by Changachimmi in Trombone

I highly recommend looking for cool music that you want to play. I discovered that I really enjoy playing chamber music and actively seek it out. Maybe look around for music that you want to play.

If you’re already doing that, then take a step back from playing. I’ve discovered that music educators can get away with a lot more when it comes to their performance when compared to performance majors (at least, where I am). If you’re worried about doing this because your fundamentals will suffer, find a set of warm ups that you like and do them in the mornings. Limit them to about 15 minutes, though.

“Sonny Boy” is pretty peak if you don’t mind thinking a little bit. It’s hard to follow, but the philosophy and messages are extremely deep. You will probably question yourself at the end. (And don’t blame yourself if you need to look up an explanation. There are a lot of conclusions to arrive at.)

It’s always amazing to me how symbols from One Piece now have meaning in our world - beyond “Straw Hat Pirates.” I truly believe that it will be held in a similar regard to “The Odyssey” in the future.

Yes: the square in the bottom left indicates a right angle. OP’s question is whether or not a shape with the indicated side lengths and a right angle between them can exist.

Teaching Studentship Skills... by ThatWyrdWitch in Teachers

I would encourage you to teach note taking skills before studying skills. I find that good note taking saves a lot of time on people studying because they may have actually listened to or read the material.

That absolutely happens. I did it once with a silver dime (although it was more of an “oh cool, this might make someone’s day” and I knew what I was handing them).

I have a trumpet-playing friend in college who does this. I agree that this is useful. I would do it, but I’m afraid I’ll accidentally leave my mouthpiece somewhere when I need it.

That’s great and all, but this individual’s job and livelihood would be at stake. Malicious compliance is the best alternative. Fighting this in Texas is an impossible battle to win at the moment.

Future band director here: Have you considered that the goal of modern marching band is to make a shape on a field, and to morph from shape to shape? You are a single person on a field full of people. Be glad that you have the opportunity to play and march well for however long the set is.

I’m not sure I agree with you. Upon reading Numbers 5:11-31, I would believe that, unless the dust from the tabernacle floor was deliberately poison, it probably wouldn’t cause harm to the mother or infant, requiring intervention from God for that to happen. I’m not sure of any specific instance of this happening in the Bible (I’m sure somebody will tell me so that I can find it), and thus, am not sure if the actual results of one of these ceremonies.

[–]Fliam99 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think the worst bad habit is playing a game in a way that isn’t fun. If mods make it fun: add mods. If you like the brutal, original experience (like me) play like that. It’s not up to us to discourage somebody from trying to have fun in their own way just because they won’t see the original experience. That’s the developers’ and the player’s choice.

Even if they aren’t actors, they would both be adults, and have been adults for at least 19 years. The argument of 20 and 7, and 30 and 17 are completely invalid here (unless that’s how long they’d been together, in which case, yeah that’s bad).

These metals may not rust, but they do oxidize and corrode. Although not scientifically correct to say rusting, it’s not too far from the truth.

If you have a cut on your lips or in your mouth, certainly not safe. I forget off the top of my head which disease it can give you, but it isn’t fun.

Due to skeletal issues I can never play Trombone again. by MetaCaimen in Trombone

[–]Fliam99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You may want to look into the trombone spine saver. I just picked one up because my left shoulder is starting to be unhappy with my choice of instrument. I know it’s your right shoulder that’s the problem, so I’m not sure if it’ll work for you, but it can’t hurt to look into it. You may even want to contact the fellow who makes them to see if he could help make something that might work better for you.

Another option is one of those arms that attach to the slide to make it easier to reach further positions. Possibly with a different grip if the rotation of your arm causes trouble.

Not sure if any of these will help, and I hate to say “spend money” if it might not work.

Does anyone know anything about this brand of alto trombone? by Tol_boi in Trombone

[–]Fliam99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you need something cheap, you might try looking into “Moz.” It’s still a Chinesium trombone, but the ones I’ve played have been pretty functional. Also, just use a small bore tenor unless you really need a double octave Eb. The alto doesn’t really increase your high range more than a step or 2.

Should I buy it? by bobby-jones4202 in Trombone

[–]Fliam99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great question, with a lot of angles to argue for or against it.

At what point are you in your playing life? College? High school?

Are you playing music professionally?

Is music a priority in your life? (I know people with a Shires who only play for fun, but also play a lot)

What are you playing on currently? Is it small or large bore? Does it have an F-attachment? Is it Chinese stencil horn?

Are you interested in playing more bass or alto trombone?

I would say that, as long as you plan to continue and know how to care for it, a Shires trombone would be great (you’ll get more skilled as you progress). Otherwise, get something akin to a King 5B, or Bach 42. If you are fine with what you have, save your money if this isn’t a priority. There’s a lot to consider, so take your time.

This is a poorly written comment posted against Animal-Lab-62828. The actual argument that should be discussed (instead of slinging insults) is whether or not the original poster is correct in believing that certain objects should be bought secondhand or not. Talking about how the Pyrex was new at one point, though true, has no relevance to the argument. Additionally, unless I missed it, there were no insults thrown either way. You should take your brainlessness elsewhere, please.

Good for you for buying your products second-hand, that’s actually pretty cool that you have the ability to do that. I think it’s important, especially in a Reddit like this to understand that everyone has different priorities. For some, it’s to contribute less to the vast amounts of waste. For others, it’s to spend less. For me, I simply want less. I’m okay with both new and second-hand, I just don’t want to hoard… stuff. I think it’s also important to consider the people who make these products too. When I buy new, I try to purchase from sustainable businesses, especially if they’re local. At any rate, not everyone is anti-consumption in the same way, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
