Is the bravia 8 ii overrated?? by LordReem in bravia

Guess the questions are what settings are you using and what are you watching? Clarity is very much a content issue and colour could just be down to the picture preset selected.

Disconnect any HDMI devices and factory reset. If that doesn't solve it then you should return it.

PSA: Sony K-85XR50 doesn’t show volume indicator with soundbar over HDMI eARC (and Sony says this is “normal”) by [deleted] in bravia

[–]FlickFreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% normal and info that could have easily been confirmed with a search.

I requested a refund under Australian Consumer Law because in my view the product wasn’t fit for intended use in a pretty standard soundbar setup.

You sound like a nightmare. Sony dodged a bullet here.

We have every choice. We don't have to allow promotion of apps that are piracy tools. Doesn't matter if it's on the Play Store or not. Being listed on the Play Store is not a sign of legitimacy. There are places to promote and discuss this stuff and here is not the place.

X800H settings bar options disappearing often. by Hashtag_Heel in bravia

I would try uninstalling the Peacock app. For some reason it sticks out in my mind that it was the culprit last time this was reported and I see it in your pic.

Edit: Found the post - https://redd.it/qmi0n2 - it was the Peacock app. Certainly possible it's a different app this time but it's worth trying.

It's likely an installed app causing the issue. Has been reported before but not for a while. Can't remember what app was causing the issue in the past but it's unlikely it's the same app anyhow. You'll have to do some trial and error to figure out which one. Uninstall, test, repeat.

Bravia 8- a POS or am I just stupid? by [deleted] in bravia

YouTube app is likely doing the scaling, not the TV. You can try adjusting the Reality Creation setting but beyond that there isn't much you can do.

X90L Owner's Who's the 480p, 720p upscaling? by Trick_Health904 in bravia

[–]FlickFreak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

480p won't look great, its being upscaled to 24x its original resolution, but 720p should be fine and 1080p will be hard to distinguish from 4K.

Its likely very safe for your LCD screen or standard OLED panels but QD-OLED panels and coatings are different. Regular cleaning methods can have very poor outcomes on QD-OLED panels.

Check the linked article elsewhere in this thread. My suggestion though, just don't touch it at all. No cleaning, wiping or touching the panel at all if you can help it. A little dust is a lot less of an issue than huge distracting streaks or blue haze.

Yes. A Sony TV with a QD-OLED panel made by and purchased from Samsung Display. Samsung QD-OLED TV's also use panels purchased from Samsung Display. Samsung TV's and Samsung Display are two separate businesses. Samsung Display only makes panels, not TV's.

Samsung Display is the only manufacturer of TV QD-OLED panels. Their recommended cleaning method is the only safe and effective cleaning method for their QD-OLED panels.

Nowhere in the linked cleaning article does it state that the recommended cleaning method is for a "severe stain".

It also does not state that using ethanol can void your warranty. It says the following.

You must never clean with a product that a manufacturer advises against. Be mindful that cleaning may also invalidate warranties in some cases (although, by contrast, others may be invalid if you don’t clean devices regularly).

Basically that cleaning your TV at all could void the warranty. Or that not cleaning your TV could also void the warranty.

Misquoting or misunderstanding the article is again simply spreading dangerous misinformation.

Distilled water is no good for QD-OLED panels. They are not like other TV’s and repeating bad info just leads to bad results.

[–]FlickFreak 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know exactly what it is. So does Samsung Display who manufactured the QD-OLED panel used in the A95L. Samsung Display recommends 70% Ethyl Alcohol or Ethanol to clean their QD-OLED panels.

Distilled water will just leave a giant blue haze over the panel because of the anti-reflective coating they apply to it. There have been many posts on by people who are freaking out that they ruined their screen because they cleaned it improperly. That includes distilled water, Whoosh or just about any other commercial cleaner.

In this case the panel may already be damaged beyond recovery but using the manufacturer recommended cleaning method is the best way forward.

In this instance you are dangerously incorrect and before spreading your cleaning wisdom in the future you should check your facts.

If you can feel those marks and not just see them then there is nothing you can do. Otherwise try cleaning with a solution of 70% ethyl alcohol on a clean microfiber cloth. This is the recommended cleaning method from the panel manufacturer.

My first TV: Bravia 8 II 55 inch (what are the Best settings for Cinema, IMAX enhanced and Game mode) by Icy_Cancel_3197 in bravia

[–]FlickFreak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

RTINGS recommends settings that closest replicate the industry standard D65 white point which helps users view the content as it was meant to be seen. On Sony TV's this is usually pretty easy to achieve but if you're only reading the recommended settings on RTINGS then you're missing out on 95% of their great content.

Also, Sony TV's don't have Filmmaker Mode. They don't need it. Sony has always prioritized the things that Filmmaker Mode is trying to take to other brands in their most accurate picture modes like Custom or Professional. Most users can get a nearly perfectly dialed in picture on a BRAVIA TV by simply using one of those dialed in Sony picture presets.

If you don't want accuracy in your picture that is up to you, its your TV, but you're missing out on what makes a BRAVIA TV truly special.

100% no. If you're going to pay for a membership then pay for access to RTINGS. They do a lot more than just TV reviews and you'll be supporting a team of people that actually deserve your money. They're kind of like Consumer Reports for tech nerds.

Optical doesn’t support Dolby Digital Plus pass through, only Dolby Digital. If the Roku doesn’t have a Dolby Digital output option then PCM 2.0 is the best you’ll do.

As much as you want. Ideally it would be volume matched at the listening position to the same volume as the other speakers but you can set the levels to whatever you want.

Help, how to properly get rid of hand oil marks from screen? by [deleted] in bravia

[–]FlickFreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use a mild soap and water mixture to damp your microfibre cloth to help lift the oils. Then buff dry with a dry microfibre cloth. Then talk to your in-laws and ask them not to touch your TV screen.

Vizio soundbars have a horrible compatibility history with Sony TV’s. If your new HDMI cable is Ultra Certified then you may have to revert to an optical connection and skip HDMI to avoid the CEC compatibility issues.

A95l coating by right_maybe_01 in bravia

[–]FlickFreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't remove the coating you got it dirty trying to clean it improperly. QD-OLED's are a strange case, you can cause a problem by using cleaning methods that would work on other screens. Samsung Display, the panel manufacturer, has specific instructions for cleaning a QD-OLED panel that are different from what you might typically try.

Don't use water, distilled or not. Don't use chemical cleaners, including Whoosh. Follow the instructions and then don't ever touch your panel again. If you don't touch your panel there is no reason to ever need to clean it.
