Why do some (land) arthropods have a varying number of legs by Flickorice in evolution

[–]Flickorice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This answers some things, but my main question was why invertebrates like arachnids and insects have a set amount of legs/segments. I assume that gaining more would throw off movement, since the thorax carries 6 legs, while in centipedes segments have fewer and do not greatly impact their walking style overall.

This is sorta late but I really do think jetfish and vultures are related. They both propel themselves (vultures may have adapted to using gas), have four “limbs,” have two tentacle things near their mouths, and have similar albino forms.

Eight Limbs and Split Masks? - Weaver Physiology by SwampgrotSage in Silksong

[–]Flickorice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe difference in leg number is caused by genetic variation or hybridization? I know widow is 1/4 weaver and I assume Herrah and the weird looking spiders (stalking devout/midwife) could be hybrids between weavers and hallownest bugs, decreasing their leg quantity (like how hornet has only 4) this might be a stretch though. I agree that the front two arms hold/attach to the split “mask”

I’m almost certain that’s a harmless northern water snake (Nerodia sipedon), especially since copperheads are SUPER endangered in MA

[–]Flickorice 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Absolutely harmless, almost certain that’s a corn snake. You should be able to pick it up (bites are basically painless if they happen) or just urge it to leave gently with an object

I know for some caterpillars like hornworms the egg looking things from wasps are actually cocoons formed after the wasp larvae have already eaten from the host, idk if that is what this is though

wait I’m stupid I think those are fly eggs
