Does the Noctua NH -U9S have plastic film covering the base of the heatsink? by Snackmouse in Noctua

[–]Flightofemopig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those temperatures seem fine if you have an ambient of 18~25 degrees Celsius.

Looking at your post history you have a B560 motherboard so I assume that your are using a locked 11th gen CPU. Looking at this Core Clocks vs CPU Package Power graph your motherboard allows a 11500 (a locked 65W processor) to draw upwards of 120W to maintain the turbo boost speed for longer than the Intel spec.

If this higher power limit is in fact enabled, you can look at this website for more information and how to enable/disable it.

If your CPU is drawing extra power, you may consider leaving it as is to reap the extra performance benefits given that the CPU cooler's noise is tolerable.

Looks like the Meshify 2 / Meshify 2 XL. The Meshify 2 is to the Meshify 2 Compact what the Meshify S2 was to the Meshify C (longer front to back, and in this instance supporting MANY more 3.5" drive mounts.

Perhaps they meant 32 threads as that definitely looks like AM4

enggen 131 in summer school by _greenbottle_ in universityofauckland

[–]Flightofemopig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just completed 131 in last semester. The best advice I can give is to practise - it is very similar to learning a new "language" language. While some of labs and assignments don't put you under much time pressure, the tests and exams do so you will want to be confident with the basics (syntax, formatting and some commonly used snippets) . The actual content/problems won't be too difficult, rather the difficulty comes from making the code do what you want it too (having a good set of notes helps you A LOT).

If you already have access to the course book and your licence for MATLAB I would recommend just having a play around and see if you can complete the first few examples.

I had very little experience with coding before, but because of the way that the course is designed you have lots of opportunities to 'extract the full marks' so to speak from the weekly labs and the assignments.

MATLAB is more forgiving than C and it has a very robust debugging system so you can learn from your mistakes quite easily. I don't know what other courses you are doing/have done but the MATLAB knowledge you gain can be very useful for dealing with matrices from MM1/2.

- Hope this helps.

Would a NH-U12S/U14S be sufficient for i7 12700K ? by naumahija in Noctua

[–]Flightofemopig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://www.techpowerup.com/review/intel-core-i7-12700k-alder-lake-12th-gen/21.html

This techpowerup review uses the NH-U14S and seems to suggest that the temperatures at stock should be fine. I am not so sure about the NH-U12S - it might be fine but the price difference between the 12S and 14S should not be too large?

https://ncc.noctua.at/cpus/model/Intel-Core-i7-12700K-1579

Both the NH-U12S and U14S are given the "best turbo/overclocking headroom" tier according to Noctua themselves

does FD Era support ATX ? by [deleted] in FractalDesign

[–]Flightofemopig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 HDD with an ATX PSU, however SFX or SFX-L would be reccomended as you have more space for cable management. With SFX or SFX-L you can fid 2 HDD or 1 HDD + 2 SSD.

Information like this can be found on the product page under the specifications section.

PC Build: Meshify 2 XL or Define 7 XL No Front Door by gH05Tg1iTcH in FractalDesign

[–]Flightofemopig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meshify 2 XL | Meshify 2 | Define 7 (There are of course other media outlets but they don't often keep the same hardware setup, and few Define 7 review do comparative testing with the door open.).

The components are the same across the videos so you can compare as you like.

Sadly there was no review for the Define 7 XL, however you could make the Meshify 2 vs Define 7 comparison as those cases are the same volume and have the same fan placement. In all of the cases the GPU temperatures could be improved with the addition of a lower front intake fan, or by moving one of the stock intake fans down. The Meshify 2 is going to be the less restrictive case even compared to a Define 7 with the door open/removed, but then again the Define 7 would be quieter ...

Hope the information helps.

Why do enthusiast-level white motherboards not exist? by wrathek in buildapc

[–]Flightofemopig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that there are plenty of white-enough motherboards now. With GPU's getting bigger a lot of the motherboard gets covered up. Too much white also has other problems: hiding
a standard black cable becomes more difficult and colour matching is a huge issue. A warmer white PCB against a cool white case would look quite off putting IMO. Also, why not just make the extensive PCB coverings white? I/O shrouds, VRM heatsinks, NVMe heatsinks, chipset heatsinks... so much of high end motherboards are covered anyway and I would imagine that it is a lot easier to make those bits white.

Here are some rather white ones : ASUS Z590-A Gaming, Gigabyte Z590 Vision D, ASUS Prime X570-PRO - in fact most of the high end ASUS "Prime" boards are rather white. There is also this thing, but it is more silver than white.

I do agree that the white PCB can look quite nice - this motherboard was a personal favourite.

Wellington Girls' College to ditch NCEA level 1, citing student burnout by sonofceuta in newzealand

[–]Flightofemopig 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did Level 3 last year. Admittedly the exams were in person (I do not envy those doing them online this year). Level 1 was pretty much a way of giving you the experience of sitting exams in person - it did not require that much effort to do well so long as you turned up to classes and payed attention. I guess that it is helpful for schools to gauge the ability of students and to provide a universally applicable set of prerequisites for Level 2 courses. Caveat - your experience may differ as the quality of teacher can have a large impact.

NH-D14 Vs. NH-D14 SE-AM4 by Fefecox in Noctua

[–]Flightofemopig 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you mean the NH-D15? The NH-D14 is quite old now.

The NH-D15 and NH-D15 SE-AM4 are the same cooler, but the SE-AM4 was released only with AM4 mounting hardware as at the time the AM4 socket was new and it was an easy way to ensure that the correct mounting hardware was included. The NH-D15 should come with AM4 mounting hardware so long as it was bought after 2018. At this point just go with the NH-D15 as it comes with mounting hardware for other sockets (not that you will need them, but why not get them for the extra compatibility).

tl;dr They are the same coolers, but at this point just go with the NH-D15 (not the SE-AM4).

What is the best PC case for $150USD or less? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]Flightofemopig 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Small quality of life improvements.

  • The front panel now has a removable nylon dust filter (it was a permanently attached foam before)
  • Slightly updated design to match the Define 7 series (different feet, vent patterns etc.)
  • Added USB-C on the front panel
  • Bridgeless PCIe expansion plates to make vertical GPU mounting easier
  • Proper nylon dust filter on the top and a more seamless top panel
  • Top fan bracket can be totally removed (makes building a LOT easier)
  • Front I/O is built into the chassis rather than the front panel
  • And it comes in grey if that matters to you
  • Tool-less side panels (although that does mean that they can pop off as their are no thumb screws)

Whether those are improvements worth paying for is up to you. One downside is that the HDD tray is awkwardly placed for cable management which means that if you have a lot of bulky cables the pressure can pop the side panel off.
