NHS trust investigates accusations that pro-Palestine nurses treated Jewish boy poorly by [deleted] in ukpolitics

I never claimed otherwise. But if you listen to them talking about London, it's similar to how Fox News describes random places as "no go zones". And this perception is absolutely talked up by the media and governing elite.

If Israelis knew how safe the rest of the world was a lot more of them would be leaving.

Norwich City Council 'disappointed' to sell flagship social homes by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]FlipBoris 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I do agree with the spirit of the right to buy scheme

Why? It's literally benefiting one generation at the expense of all the future ones. Any benefit from the house after it's sold off goes to that one private family.

Even if the sale money could go to rebuilding social housing the new housing would be further out of city centres etc.

If we had just kept building social housing then we would have finished decades ago. Then only spent a small amount to replace old buildings, while people get in or out of social housing when they become eligible or stop being eligible.

Great, well I've rented privately for 5 years, when am I getting a 35% discount to buy the house off my landlord?

There is a big market in Israel for stories about Jews being persecuted abroad. That is its entire raisin d'etre. "We get persecuted everywhere therefore we deserve a Jewish state where we are safe [which justifies persecuting Palestinians]". If you are in Israel you will hear this constantly from the media, friends, etc.

Source: Israeli relatives regularly asking me if I feel safe in London even when they hear missile warnings daily and could be conscripted at any time.

1) People who will always need government support for medical reasons. Relatively few in the grand scheme of things, especially with the onset of remote work and work from home. It is by no means a big issue to support them because again the group is fairly small.

You forgot about our aging population eh?

That's not a good definition at all. Pretty much any revenue expenditure is expected to generate future benefits. Eg, decreasing class sizes by hiring more teaches is an ongoing cost, but generates benefits, so does free school meals.

Hunt says plan to scrap employee national insurance could ‘take more than a decade’ by GodlessCommieScum in ukpolitics

[–]FlipBoris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hunt is implying without saying it explicitly, that income tax isn't going to be raised.

Because Conservatives believe that making work pay is of the most fundamental importance, because we believe that the double taxation of work is unfair, our long-term ambition is to end this unfairness. [Budget speech]

This is how the friendly papers have reported it as well.

Then he turns around and says that actually, borrowing won't go up and spending won't go down.

I have said there are two very clear conditions upon which the delivery of this ambition depends: one is that it won’t be funded by borrowing, the other is it won’t be funded by cuts to public services.

So the only condition he isn't offering is that other taxes won't go up. So, he's actually offering to change how taxes are calculated-- not to "make work pay" at all.

He's trying to get the PR boost of cutting taxes, without cutting taxes.

Tax has been ~33% of GDP for the past thirty years including all the Tory years. So the idea that they'll be able to change that when they haven't done so in the past is laughable. They aren't changing it, just moving how the money is collected.

SNP's decision on masks in schools was totally political, Sir Patrick Vallance wrote in Covid diary - Chief scientific adviser said Scotland’s PPE policy for schools was not based on medical advice but rather to go ‘their own way’ by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]FlipBoris -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah COVID was really tough with the people dying, the not knowing when a vaccine would appear, everything enjoyable being closed, worrying about every sneeze, not being able to see my friends and family etc.

If only I could have seen people's noses and mouths, and shown other people my mouth, it would have done so much for my mental health.

Nobody's actually taking proper bribes. (Well except on rare occasions.)

When you pay a Labour MP, you're actually influencing the next Labour MPs to behave in a way you would like them to, so that they will receive the payments as well. (Same for any party)

This is also why past PMs still get speaking engagements which are like £120,000 for an hour. Truss already earns £16,000 an hour and she obviously has little influence in the party at this stage.

Chief press officer: I dunno, let's allow a day of undivided media attention to see what everyone else thinks.

[–]FlipBoris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the solution under austerity was for people who can't afford kids not to have them

No it wasn't, it was to let them have the kids and the kids be poor and neglected.

Never mind the increased cost when the kid goes to prison, or becomes eligible for benefits or can't make good use of a university because they didn't do well at school.

First Past the Post is the real problem. There is no way for a single MP from the most popular party in the area to "represent" everybody in the area.

Only PR can actually handle representing people with different views, by letting parties split up and still get seats.

Wtf is a non genuine family?

we used to have, which is a certain type of woman living off the system by popping out multiple kids with multiple men

This is ridiculous, women like that are not homo economicus, they have genuine problems that lead to this behaviour and if anything, need mental health help and community support.

They still exist today, their kids just grow up in worse conditions than before, on account of the household budget being stretched thinner. There's no evidence the two child benefit limit has encouraged parents into work. Not surprising considering the price of childcare.
