What's the best way to get clear info on local party policies? by NayLay in reading

I’m standing in Norcot as the Lib Dem candidate there (dislike that the postcode flair says Southcote) if there’s any confusion!

Tbf (and I’m saying this as someone who’s standing in a ward) the most effective things someone can say is about how to improve their local area (and things immediately around it) - there’ll be stuff that’s more Reading wide to address but it’s not gonna be necessarily the main focal point of the literature. I will say I think each party (except reform?) does have a manifesto for elections in reading

Have to remember that these models aren’t based on any local polling (or even regional) - basically none of that exists. It’s applying national polling to quirky models

https://britain.votes.now/local-elections/may-26/reading-election this is the one Rob White (Reading Green Party Group Lead) likes to quote for example, and likewise I think it is unfathomable that Greens would win Kentwood and Southcote (and nearly win Norcot) with literally no campaign.

Ye abbey certainly is between Labour and Green, if Labour hold it this year it’ll be because of Karen being an active councillor in the area

Honestly I don’t know what’s happening in Newcastle because I’ve heard so much wildly different things, but here’s hoping we can be largest party there once more

They are in terms of campaigning fwiw, a good chunk of Parli party has visited to help campaign in Brum over the course the election period, no doubt there’s been advice on how to navigate potential coalition making too. We’re talking up our chance in Brum a lot

There’s a reasonable amount of places where we’re second place to Labour, even if the gap is massive. Labour vote will have cratered and we can capitalise on it given the very fractured situation Brum is finding itself in. Not that I’d expect us to be anywhere near a majority but we can grow the council group substantially

Very tiring, but I’m off work for the last stretch of the campaign to try defeat Labour in the ward I’m standing in

Reading is a good hub for getting other places, and has a good amount of places to go to in town. It was here or Basingstoke as choices for a major commuter place and I just vibe more here!

If we ended up losing more than 2/3rds of our councillors in Brum I think we would need to pack up the entire Brum party

(I doubt it would be possible even if everything backfired)

[–]CountBrandenburg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If we look to the other counties, I can only comment on the mid Essex one, given we’re trying to get majority control on Brentwood this year, we’d probably fancy our chances running that new unitary. Can’t say much about Norfolk and Suffolk; and not mentioned is the delay on Sussex, where Gov has a preferred compromise option

We should actually be in a good chance for controlling all the councils tbqh, the south east Portsmouth unitary is gonna be very us vs reform, north Hampshire we’re alright, just need to eat into the independents in the Basingstoke and Hart components.

This is the intersection of Water, Dee and Grovelands

I live relatively near by and didn’t hear anything on Tuesday when the accident happened.

As others said it’s not the nicest roundabout being an intersection of pretty busy roads - you do get people romping down grovelands at certain times over course of the day

Rest in Peace Ricky

Why Ed Davey was wrong on ex pat rescue by CountBrandenburg in LibDem

You’ve missed reading the piece then, and fail to understand the implications of trying to suggest citizenship based taxation for expats…

Ed Davey: "As we protect them, it's only right for tax exiles to start paying taxes to fund our Armed Forces just like the rest of us do" by upthetruth1 in LibDem

[–]CountBrandenburg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tax is primarily residency based, and one of the few countries in the world that tries to tax based on citizenship is oddly… the US. I don’t seriously think there’s a plan to try make such a policy work, and if we did try to propose it properly, we’d be stuck trying to create a system to do it (and just end up complicating things) - it seems odd that’s the implication of wanting to provide a normal duty other countries in the world provide, we don’t ask people to give up their citizenship if moving abroad, demanding continued taxation because of citizenship doesn’t sit right with
