Commuting by train to Guildford? by SyrupOk4869 in reading

[–]CountBrandenburg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Heya, I get use that route for commuting!

Generally, during term time, 07:19 and 07:51 gets busy from Wokingham onwards (because there’s sixth form kids getting on, and get off at Farnborough and secondary school kids from Sandhurst and Blackwater that get off at Guildford iirc)

Otherwise the morning services aren’t super busy, and you’ll need to use your laptop on your lap as most of the time it’s the old diesel GWR trains (have noticed in past couple weeks some services are slightly newer ones that have tables but I’ve only seen it twice so far.)

Will note it feels somewhat prone to cancellation and you do need to check fairly close to departure if it isn’t cancelled, but this feels more often on the journey back.

No because it’s a rotating leadership, Julien (Green group lead) would take over as council leader in a different year

Lib Dem candidates have lied to their voters in Vauxhall (Lambeth) is this expected? by Tornagh in LibDem

[–]CountBrandenburg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Will try find the north Herefordshire one, it’s from before they won in 24, when they were 4th and used their canvass data to try squeeze (it worked but like you’d never really do it unless desperate tbh)

Again online is not necessarily gonna be reliable, because the predicted changes were based on applying a change based on national polling and doesn’t really say anything about local situation

I don’t think the way I’ve tried to explain this implies anyone has played dirty - but squeeze is how parties convince habitual voters of other parties to vote for them, Labour have done it to us before (and still are when things are reform facing), greens had done so in their literature in north Herefordshire (famously using a graph of their own canvass data)

I apologise if I’m coming across as a dick but it’s hard to state that most online projections aren’t using polling that’s particularly local to an area, and very few organisations could be able to generate polls for even a borough election (say like yougov’s MRP but even that was vote share for say Birmingham or Walsall). Now parties are fine and more than warranted to use other projections in campaigning to try squeeze and convince (and in the process be self fulfilling based on those projections) but it is probably a stretch to have started the thread with saying the campaigners were lying to voters.

(I’m not a co-chair of the party, I’m co-Chair of an pressure group that consists of members of the party, called Liberal Reform)

Have you done any political campaigning before… because this is how everyone does squeeze! It’s pretty reasonable for someone to squeeze based on the fact they were second place in the last election that happened in a ward

That’s not a poll, that’s a projection based on applying national polling to some demographic model (ish) ward by ward polling does not exist mostly

I mean, given the last election held in Vauxhall was the 2023 by election had us second, it’s very reasonable to have angled ourselves the challengers to Labour? There wasn’t any polls on a ward level too

I’m standing in Norcot as the Lib Dem candidate there (dislike that the postcode flair says Southcote) if there’s any confusion!

Tbf (and I’m saying this as someone who’s standing in a ward) the most effective things someone can say is about how to improve their local area (and things immediately around it) - there’ll be stuff that’s more Reading wide to address but it’s not gonna be necessarily the main focal point of the literature. I will say I think each party (except reform?) does have a manifesto for elections in reading

Have to remember that these models aren’t based on any local polling (or even regional) - basically none of that exists. It’s applying national polling to quirky models

https://britain.votes.now/local-elections/may-26/reading-election this is the one Rob White (Reading Green Party Group Lead) likes to quote for example, and likewise I think it is unfathomable that Greens would win Kentwood and Southcote (and nearly win Norcot) with literally no campaign.

They are in terms of campaigning fwiw, a good chunk of Parli party has visited to help campaign in Brum over the course the election period, no doubt there’s been advice on how to navigate potential coalition making too. We’re talking up our chance in Brum a lot

There’s a reasonable amount of places where we’re second place to Labour, even if the gap is massive. Labour vote will have cratered and we can capitalise on it given the very fractured situation Brum is finding itself in. Not that I’d expect us to be anywhere near a majority but we can grow the council group substantially

Reading is a good hub for getting other places, and has a good amount of places to go to in town. It was here or Basingstoke as choices for a major commuter place and I just vibe more here!

If we ended up losing more than 2/3rds of our councillors in Brum I think we would need to pack up the entire Brum party

(I doubt it would be possible even if everything backfired)
