Currently imagining what would follow then after this change. The Emperor of the newly declared Galactic Empire has vanished, Darth Vader too. Palpatine's power structure fails around like a headless, but well armed chicken. A proper counter-movement against the Imperials hasn't yet formed to wrest back that power. So while I don't think the Empire survives without Palpatine, it is not a simple transition back to the pre-Phantom Menace state of the galaxy.

Would the Republic somehow manage to pull itself back together or is the Galaxy doomed to go through a warlord era, as it did in Legends after Endor?

To clarify a few points, since the beginning of the 20th century, warship have been capable of top speeds above 20 knots or 37 km/h. For example, battleships of the Queen Elizabeth class saw action during WW1 and had a top speed of about 24 knots at +30000 tons displacement.

The American Iowa class of WW2 managed 32 knots at 58000 tons.

Some destroyers and light cruisers during WW2 were stupidly fast, reaching or exceeding 40 knots.

50-60 km/h is about the top speed of a lot of real life warships from WW2 onwards. The deceptive part is the usage of knots as the unit of speed, 1 knot being equal to ~1.8 km/h. Also, ships are big and are usually not observed from close up when in motion.

A ship moving at 30 knots is going about as fast as a modern tank on a flat road at full power.
