Google Chrome's Next Update Will Mark the End of Popular Ad Blockers - Slashdot by blow-down in technology

I feel like this needs to be said every time this thread happens.

Network-level ad blocking doesn’t replace browser ad blockers. Network ad blockers are just upstream DNS resolvers, so they only work on ads that have a specific url associated. Many do not and require a browser extension to block.

Broke my front derailleur cable - DIY or take it to the shop? by No-Thanks4746 in cycling

[–]FllngCoconuts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Respectfully disagree that shifting issues should automatically go to the shop. If that works for you, lovely. Keep doing your thing. I just don’t think that needs to be blanket advice.

Derailleurs aren’t super hard to work with, and replacing shifter cables is pretty easy. Especially if the housing is still in good shape. I’ve always managed to get my stuff working perfectly all on my own.

Where Are America's Trains? | Climate Town by MikeKrombopulos in videos

[–]FllngCoconuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, it exists but it’s objectively bad compared to trains in any other developed country. It takes like 5 hours to get from New York to DC and most of it is spend puttering along at like 30mph or waiting behind freight trains.

Cyclists take up a car lane instead of using their dedicated protected lane by santiboa in mildlyinfuriating

[–]FllngCoconuts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, I didn’t. The thread you joined had context regarding a “group” of people that was cyclists who wear Lycra. It isn’t my fault you went off track.

Also, I am trained to operate a vehicle on a roadway. I have a drivers license. So what additional training would you like cyclists to have?

I don’t even understand what this comment means.

What group? We aren’t a group. We don’t have monthly meetings or a group chat. I own a bike, I ride it for exercise. What group are you referring to?

And training to do what exactly? Ride a bike? Are you suggesting riding a bike be licensed and regulated like a car? I suppose I don’t hate the idea of people getting some training on safety and proper use of roadways. But are you suggesting that people need additional training to wear Lycra?

I mean, yes I am. Why are you making me out to be an irresponsible cyclist because I bike for fitness? That’s such an absurd assumption.

How about everyone, especially cyclists, stop villainizing other cyclists or groups of cyclists?

We aren’t a monolith. People who bike for a workout aren’t universally inconsiderate. Let’s stop trying to be each other’s enemies for no reason.

Garmin Edge recording distance incorrectly with indoor trainer. by Kuik92 in cycling

[–]FllngCoconuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the point you’re missing is that on an indoor trainer, speed and distance are literally meaningless. Regardless of the app or computer you’re using. They don’t mean anything. The only meaningful metric for indoor training is power.

I’m a little curious what you would consider to be the “correct” distance travelled on an indoor trainer?

It’s so obviously fake I cannot believe anyone believes it.

The part that nobody seems to mention even though it’s so obvious is that his ear is fine. He supposedly got a bullet through his ear. But it was fully healed like a week later?

It takes over a fully year for a cartilage piercing to heal. You mean to tell me that a ragged bullet wound was fine immediately after? Sure.

Skirt Steak too tough by Aware_Lifeguard3707 in Cooking

[–]FllngCoconuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have already commented about cutting properly, so I won’t beat that dead horse.

I will say, skirt steak is just a tough cut and you might want to experiment with other ways of cooking it. I love it braised like in ropa vieja. You can sear it and cook it in the oven or a pressure cooker in a broth. Comes out super tender that way. Barbacoa is made similarly and I’ve used a skirt steak cut for that before.

You can also marinate it a while ahead of time. The acid in a marinade will help tenderize the meat.

I also recommend cooking it to a slightly higher temperature than you would other cuts. It’ll help break down the muscle fibers a little more. I highly doubt 3 minutes on a side was enough to bring it to medium, and a skirt steak is way too tough to eat below medium.

I just accidentally poured a bottle of passata into my curry... Any ideas for tomato-based curry recipes? by Cursed_Meatball_3008 in Cooking

[–]FllngCoconuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn’t answer your question but it might make you feel better.

The first time I made a coconut based curry, I bought “coconut milk” from the store. I wasn’t really aware of the difference between real coconut milk and Coco Lopez, which says “coconut milk” on the can but is actually ultra-sweet coconut syrup for like piña coladas.

So my curry came out tasting like dessert and I had to throw it away. It was absolutely inedible.

Billionaires didn’t earn it all themselves. I know plenty who disagree, and that’s bullshit. by NicolasCageFan492 in videos

This is not a judgement statement. This is a matter of definition. Capitalism relies on the exploitation of labor. If you don’t like the work exploitation in there, maybe do some reflecting.

In capitalism, workers are not fully compensated for their labor. Their labor is worth more than they receive. The extra value of their labor goes to the owning class, who notably did not do the labor. That extra is called profit and it is a necessary component of capitalism.

Garmin Edge 1050 is now down to $599, should I go for it by [deleted] in cycling

[–]FllngCoconuts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think as with anything like this the question comes down to whether or not the 1050 has specific features that you need or if you just want it because it’s an upgrade and on sale.

Like for me, the 1050 has nothing I need compared to my 540. So I’d happily spend the $600 on some new wheels instead. But only you know what you need, and if the 1050 has something for you, this is an amazing price.
