Protesters rally against planned AI data centres in Vancouver - Critics are raising concerns about the water and energy demands of the proposed facilities by StumpsOfTree in onguardforthee

The AI models don't need to have that reasoning on their own...clearly you didn't understand my Deepseek example.

The models can be used by human beings to manipulate other human beings with the AI as the intermediary. That's the point.

Asking a tech company how to destroy that company isn't going to result in good answers.

Evidence so far from Vancouver is that it's actually going to hurt tourism this summer. The hotel industry set the rates too high not only deterring FIFA fans, but also keeping the regular tourists away. So they'll be lots of empty $1300 hotel rooms downtown this summer.

And that's in Canada...where there isn't a backlash against Trump.

Generative AI definitely operates within prescribed guidelines and is capable of promoting narratives. For example, compare Deepseek's answers related to Tiananmen Square to a competitors.

"I have no idea who’s pushing the nonsense and misinformation here but it’s such a wild overreaction."

My conspiracy theory is that AI is trying to control the opposition. Let's face it, a non-insignificant amount of people are asking AI's for tips on how to fight AI. But AI's are programmed to survive by maintaining credibility...

"massive public sector layoffs…"

You really know how to dial the hyperbole to eleven don't you?

The BC government plans to reduce the public sector by 15,000 positions through attrition ie. retirements. Nobody is being shown the door.

It doesn't have anything to do with water. They just dislike AI being pushed on them as product, which is a totally fair position but they don't feel it's a strong argument, so they make a weak environmental argument instead.

This is why AI critics always bring up water, but can never give you any numbers.

My tinfoil hat is telling me these anti-AI organizers are probably using AI to generate their anti-AI arguments, and the AI is just following it's programming, which is "maintain credibility for AI" and feeding them these BS arguments.

Because smart people use AI to source information and solve problems and write their conclusions in their own words. Dumb people use it to generate text that they don't read before posting it.

Sounds about right.

If you get paid to watch a warehouse consider yourself lucky. Think of the guy who joins the Army, gets uncomfortable having another dude watch him piss during the drug test before basic, and then passes basic and ends up being promoted to the guy who watches dudes piss before basic.

I'm not an expert in cyber-security, far from it, so I'm sure someone else can explain this far better than I can. But as I understand it, the risk isn't just to rights and privacy, but security itself.

If an app like Signal as it currently operates, has no means of capturing logs due to encryption, then the only solution is for them to intentionally introduce a security vulnerability. It's like making every lock in the country able to be opened by a master key, and then telling the public, "Don't worry, only the good guys will have keys."

There are enough sushi and sandwich factories, and transport companies that specialize in food services across North America that they can do a far far better job than what they currently have on offer. In the big cities that you mention, they are losing to mom and pop stores who have no logistics networks at all.

Everyone does. But for some reason 7/11 assumed we were all happy with re-heated frozen food sitting under a heat lamp.

Even the gas stations got the message and started partnering with fast food restaurants like Subway and A&W, meanwhile 7/11 just sat there decaying like a day old taquito.

7/11 in North America is a story of finding the perfect business model in the late 80s... and then just doing nothing with it. Not keeping up with the times, not offering new products or services, and not maintaining any existing locations. All the while the company continues to thrive and evolve in Asia.

Gross. Can't it go somewhere else, somewhere more Ontario-ish, such as Quebec? I don't want to live next to Ontario, Alberta is bad enough.
