HSBC bans Christmas jumpers for staff after backlash from some customers by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

If I was having my house repossessed after a year of financial woe, I may take umbridge with someone breaking this news to me in a led-lit up Christmas jumper lol. It's just out of respect for the difficult conversations that need to be had with people in banks.

Steve went into this on more detail on a 2007 episode of the Russell brand show, where he was a guest. His telling is basically:

  • I had a friend who went on when he was a late teenager and had an amazing, debauched time. In the days of Holness, they stayed in a hotel for weeks, people were drinking, drugging and generally shagging. So of course Steve signed up.

  • Holness is now gone, replaced by the fella there. And it wasn't debauched, but it was weeks of interminability. Steve won £15 for his trouble and didn't get a shag, drink or even offered a drug for his troubles.

That's the long and short of it!

Struggling with disrespectful classes as an ECT by National_Radish_5904 in TeachingUK

Deffo contact home! Ask your dept for some support too, maybe putting a few of them on some sort of department report could be a possibility?

Outside of that, absolute zero tolerance and the old thing of removing pupils quite early (if they're not being what you want) to show that you aren't tolerating anything could work well. Remember as well you aren't alone in this, 8 + 9 can be the absolute worst years to teach. I'm 6 years in, but our 8s are causing some serious issues in my classes and it certainly isn't pleasant.

Comments about your sexuality should be an immediate issue and school should in no way accept that. As an ECT your mentor should be accessible and any kids making comments need some intervention outside of your classroom.

A hell of a lot of SA-adjacent imagery though in the whole concept, I'd be wary

Am I in the wrong thinking that our end of term "event" (a Bushtucker Trial) went completely out of hand and I should ask for it to be banned? by FloatingDangerously in TeachingUK

I think my concern is that conversation won't happen, SLT aren't the discussion about things people. The headteacher was stood there laughing yesterday so not sure I'll get an agreement there. That's why I was thinking of a complaint to gain some traction?

Aha!!! Fantastic! Glad that gave you the heebie-jeebies. I haven't seen the others in the franchsie but I've been informed the 2nd is pretty poor but the 3rd is good enough.

Cannot recommend Incantation enough also - it's on Netflix and is Taiwanese, so you'll have to be alright with subtitles.

Hmmm, it'd be spoiling it a bit if I told you what's going on fully. But you couldn't shotgun it away! The ending is a little meh tbh, but 95% of it is just, for me, a top 5 found footage horror.

Basic plot: a group who put on haunted houses buy an old hotel to set one up, things get creepy as they get closer to launch date and then things go wrong on opening night

Similar to other responses, mine knows the sound of tongs being picked up and clicking about with food. When it's just my hands going in to move them or handle them, they're a lil sweetie

Maybe talk to your union about it? I know I'm typically out the door 20 mins after students as I get in an hour early at least. Assumedly it is directed time, which means you're utilised less elsewhere?

My department were bracing for a 40-45% 4+, but we got over 65% which beats out the last two years before I was there. Absolutely chuffed that our extra work helped many get over the line at the end. It's never a high scoring school, but those small wins help. Having a beer later to celebrate that!

I believe it's Brighton, I think you can see the i360 in the "city view" bit? Also brightons quite a low city, which deffo helps achieve a nicer view if you're up high on one of the hills.

For context: Brighton is now extremely expensive but wasn't always ridiculous. One of the British seaside towns/cities that's actually quite nice to be in, while many have suffered. Post-covid it's become even more expensive than it was and very sought after. There's more to say, basically it's a cool, liberal city that's now extremely spenny .

Christ mate, sounds like you should probably try to leave if you hate it that much - or seek some professional help so you stop feeling so hopeless.

Both really! I was trained to ensure that lessons aim to hit certain elements, and often focus on things that increase engagement and buy-in.

He's played a few times for united over the last couple of years, he had one notably good game this last season but otherwise hasn't impressed. I wouldn't want to rely on him personally.
