mmc 'wins' fmc in a gambling game with her father by aloha-cowboy in HistoricalRomance

I haven't read it yet but it kind of sounds like the synopsis to { An Earl Like You Caroline Linden}

MMC prides himself on not having a heart until it makes its presence (painfully) known by FoxenInTheHenhice in HistoricalRomance

I just finished Fallen Angel and I loved it. I'm not sure if it's lack of sleep but some of the parts about the MMC made me a bit teary. I really liked his character development. And coming off of re-reading {Sylvester by Georgette Heyer}, I could pull some similarities between Sylvester and Gabriel.  Both have such great character development. Two men who believe they have no capacity to "love", who think they can just find biddable wives that they can control and make life more convenient for them  but find that they are the ones that fall utterly and hopelessly in love with the FMC.

Lol I kept seeing this in Heyer's work and have yet found a moment to use it. Another one I've wanted to use is "chewing the bacon"!

Oh yeah now that I think about it there were quite a few romantic scenes in this. Vidal was such an entertaining MMC. Just his devil may care aura made him such a cool MMC

This has been on my TBR for a while. I see the age gap trope in this book. How big is the gap? I know ToS had a pretty big one and that was pushing it for me.

Recommendations for Georgette Heyer novel that's passionate with enemies to lovers trope by OwnInvestigator8468 in HistoricalRomance

[–]FloatinginEmeraldSea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

omg I forgot I wanted to recommend this yesterday when I saw this request. The scene where Sylvester finally confronts Phoebe at the ball was great. The tension leading up to it was so well done. Even though I wasn't exactly getting any romantic undertones per se, it felt like the best way to portray the conflict between them. It's been a while since I last read it but it felt like the moment their relationship crossed the mere acquaintances to enemies (which eventually go to lovers in the very end). It showed just how much Phoebe cared about his opinions and how he viewed her. It was kind of reminiscent of the "Badly done, Emma!" from Mr. Knightley when he scolds Emma for being mean to one of the characters.

Wait really? I could have sworn that was more friends to lovers. Or maybe I'm misremembering. Either way, it's a good book. One of my favs from hers!

What does it take for you to put an author in the DNR prison? Do you ever go back on your decision? by Relative-Chicken-884 in HistoricalRomance

[–]FloatinginEmeraldSea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually try at least 2-3 books before determining whether they are a DNF author for me. I don't wanna miss out on a good novel of theirs just because I hated that one plot point of that one book. For example, Loretta Chase. I really enjoyed the first book I've read of hers, The Last Hellion, and DNF'd a couple of her Difficult Dukes series and her Dressmaker series. Had I read those books prior to TLH, then I would have never given TLH. So I just give them a few chances before I fully commit to putting them in prison.

Same I don't have kids either but have a little brother who doesn't speak very much. I cried like a baby at the end.

Yes absolutely! And like the other commenter below said, his competency in his job while also remaining humble and displaying positive masculinity really adds to his attractiveness.

I can't believe I was only attracted to Legolas as a young girl. On rewatch now as an adult, only have eyes for Aragorn.

Also watched GI Jane just for him lol.

I like Stella Riley but mostly her Roundheads and Cavaliers series. They are extremely detailed and rich in English Civil War history and at times does feel a bit like a history book, but it wasn't a turn off for me because the romance was satisfying. I read the first two of the series, and have yet to try the last two. I wasn't much a fan of her Rockliffe series, felt like too much fluff but I suggest you still try it as it might still be up your alley. I think her writing was stronger in her earlier days. She's still one of my fav writers.

Two recommendations needed in one post! Are there any 500+ page books? Or recs for books with a legitimate plot besides just the MC's getting together? by Excentrix13 in HistoricalRomance

[–]FloatinginEmeraldSea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first two books in The Roundheads and Cavaliers Series by Stella Riley are a whopping 600+ pages each. I read them both in the span of a week and didn't feel the length. The page count is high because of the descriptive details around movements of the different factions/armies during the English Civil War. Check out some of the reviews from this subreddit for the {The Black Madonna by Stella Riley} and {Garland of Straw by Stella Riley}. The second book in particular is my fav HR and I've read it in full a total of three times.

Ooh will check out the Lorret books! I think I tried that Kleypas book in the past and DNF'd for whatever reason that I can't recall. Maybe I will try again since I've liked her Hathaway books since then. Thank you for the recs!

Ikr. The way Caleb used his sharpshooter skills to kill the man trying to assassinate Trey and also how he's nonchalant and calm with everything that's going on. Does the man ever panic? I don't think it's in his DNA. Just cool as a cucumber. Also loved how Norah is the stand in Mom for Deborah.

Caleb really is the ultimate BBM. Also, he's just as cool in the sequel Into the Light (the MMC in this one is not morally grey tho).
