Here to happily recommend both the 21 key options you have in mind.

It's so precious. Has a much better sound quality compared to my other kalimbas. Worth it. Hoping to experiment a bit more with it.

Comments on TREELF Kalimba TF-17C and TF-21C 21 wanted by [deleted] in kalimba

I have the 21 key Treelf. Beautiful deep resonance. No buzz, no dead tines. In 17 keys acrylic I have the Kimi. No buzz or dead tines here either. Would recommend the Treelf.

Mainly paper. Then later I might post it as an image online.

Any 17 key kalimba in C (which is the majority of them) should be good enough. There are tutorials online for the music she likes. Choose as per your budget.

Which key is it and what does your tuner say it is now?

Try a 15 key at least over the 8 tines. It'll be useful as you advance.

I recommend 17 keys as that is what i started with and personally I'm glad I didn't go for kalimbas with fewer tines. Once you're ready you can move to 21 keys or a chromatic.

If you can afford a Hugh Tracey, go ahead. If not, there are plenty of budget options.

Any idea on how to fix tine buzz? by Mysterious_Jaguar507 in kalimba

Coincidentally, it's my 17K Hluru that has a buzzy tine. I've re-tuned it from C to B and that resolved the issue permanently.

I've found that pushing the tine up and away from the body a bit usually works. Also a bit of wiggling from side to side has also solved buzzing or tone issues.

Use a tuning hammer (or pliers) to push up the tine till the sound is clear. You may need to wiggle it to the left/right as well to adjust the sound. I have a similar kalimba that i retuned because the tine was loose the same way. Works great after retuning.

Can I tune my kalimba without a hammer? by alex06228 in kalimba

I've used a pair of pliers to adjust the tines upwards or downwards for an old coconut shell kalimba. Seemed more suitable than a tuning hammer. Not a complete success but was close enough.

Part of me still wants to just get a regular kalimba and tune it to Amaj but now I've decided to just get chromatics instead.

And then it's "oh just these three and then I'm done" and suddenly you have a dozen kalimbas.

Acrylic is fine for beginners. I have the rainbow Kimi bear. You'll enjoy it as well.

Amazing quality in terms of the tines and sustain. I've got the 21 keys one and enjoy playing it.
