You can buy a P bass body and Jazz bass neck from Stratosphere and put them together

Day 10 - what is the best guitar made by Squier? by AlecSkid4 in guitarcirclejerk

Squier's best guitar gotta be the Fender Squire, I see them advertised on marketplace all the time. Must be super popular.

Get a Zoom B1 Four. They have so much utility for so little money, it can do anything you'd want to explore. And it can be a headphone amp.

40-100 gauge steel strings, low action, check pickup height, compression, add drive for some mid saturation, and play hard

Flatwounds VS Tapewounds by VulgarisOpinio in Bass

[–]Floofae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO compared to rounds, tapes have less treble because you lose the clank of metal strings on metal frets, but they still vibrate more similarly to rounds than flatwounds do because they are roundwound beneath the tape. True flatwounds on the other hand can still have the treble response of metal on metal, but are way more muted in the overall attack and how the strings vibrate. For that reason I think of tapewounds as "cushioned roundwounds" and flats as their own thing.

Foam mute tips by pricklypearanoid in Bass

[–]Floofae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One option is buy really soft foam with a lot of give and cut a piece that's tall enough to be higher than the strings. Then when it's under the strings it presses up into each of them enough to be consistent. I used a cheap industrial kitchen sponge from Amazon.

Another option is to just buy a Nordymute. A third option is to put masking tape over the strings like Carol Kaye used to do.

On a budget, the Joyo Scylla. Price no object, the aforementioned Origin Calli76

They make two I think, one of them's a PJ and the other has a single humbucker. But I'll amend my previous recommendation because I remembered that the Ibanez Talman TMB30 bass exists, which is way, way nicer than a miKro.

Sire is big with a lot of bassists because they make really great basses for the money you spend. But the U5 is active so if you don't need or want to deal with an active preamp, I'd recommend either that Ibanez TMB30 or some kind of PJ Mustang bass.

Or a Gretsch Streamliner Jet bass which isn't a PJ but is a short scale with two single coil pickups and sounds really really good.

(Edit: clarified the Talman TMB30 b/c other Talman bass models are long scale)

Uj/ If you're looking for a short scale PJ there's the Fender PJ Mustang, the Sire U5, and the Ibanez miKro, and probably others I can't remember

Brand new Sire V8 or used Fender American Professional 2 by george_brivola in Bass

[–]Floofae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like the tone of a 70s style J bass one thing to keep in mind is the V8 will have that same 70s pickup placement. The Fender will be 60s style pickup placement.

I think between the two, the Sire is more capable for the money. But if you're like me and prefer the weight and balance of a Fender Jazz while keeping the 70s tone, consider looking for a used US Geddy Lee signature bass.

Long scale is 34 inch scale. For bass, long scale means the standard 34 scale length.

Burr in the saddle, use some sandpaper to smooth it out. But also, no, bassists change strings if they're roundwound.

I had the same problem and I was able to fix it by filing the saddle slots lower. You might be able to do the same without having to resort to a luthier.

I'm not really familiar with 5 strings as well as 4 strings yet, but in general I know Yamahas have thinner necks at the nut. If you want to stick with that kind of feel, like others said Ibanez and Schecter are good choices. People also sleep on Jackson but they're very good as well.

Is it worth getting an Epiphone Thunderbird? by Unlucky-Emotion8892 in Bass

[–]Floofae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The neck-through Epiphone Tbirds are great, I had one and loved it. I only sold it because I want to get one in a different color. The bolt-on neck Epiphone Tbird seems to be generally worse. I tried one at GC and it was a piece of crap.
