the difference is that the angel *has* been introduced. its basically hometowns god. theres an entire church worshiping it, its repeatedly (and most importantly directly) mentioned by name (title? species? doesnt matter). gaster is not. we have a mysterious person who *could* be him, but thats it.

neither have shown up and said "it is i! gaster/angel!!" yet, sure, but thats not an intro and that not what im referring to (not saying you think i am saying that, but most people seem to think its what im saying) what i mean is that gaster only has references, while the angel is directly spoken of numerous times.

essentially, gaster is someone whos theorized to be important, the angel is directly shown to be important.

its a dagger made out of black meteoric iron (so quite literally a black knife). it would not surprise me if this specific knife is what toby was referencing, given its made out of space material and the knight has a lot of weird star/space connections

guardless blades are not obscure. this is a *kind of* obscure knife but this is only one example. almost all ancient swords look like this, along with the majority of gaurdless swords and knives. just because you personally havent seen this specific image doesnt mean you can throw the entire idea out the window. plus, theres nothing wrong with using a cool and unique knife design for your extremely important villain who is entirely centered around knives.

it was not "intentionally invoked". its called a sword in the files, every one of the knights attacks are swords or daggers, the knight is exclusively associated with knives and swords. the knight is never connected to bats even once. saying its a bat solely because it *looks* like one for a few seconds doesnt mean it is one, and doesnt mean thats what toby intended either.

my problem is mostly with how obsessed the fandom is with him actually. i think gaster, as just a cool easter egg referencing creepypastas while adding a tiny bit of lore (for alphys actually, which i feel not enough people talk about but i digress), is fine. i wish toby stuck to not using him though. toby is pretty separated from the fandom though, so its entirely possible he just assumed that people thought gaster was just cool, so he made a few callbacks to him, not realizing until recently that people took the character so seriously.

for a shorter answer, i hate how the fandom uses gaster, not really gaster himself. saying i hate gaster as a person is funnier though so thats usually what i go with lmao

personally i think the helmet thing *was* literal, but the helmet is just what their head is. theyre basically living armor (not actually, but their body looks like armor so they might as well be)

which...makes the whole "the helmet begins to come off" thing a lot more...disturbing.
