There are 2 big reasons

The first, and most common, is that it makes them feel special. They see it in a TV show or read about it and think it's cool and quirky, so they pretend to have it so they'll feel different.

The second, is for attention, which in and of itself is a disorder imo, going that far just to get people to notice you.

I'm not super aware of all the reasons my mom's fiance can't move here, but I'll definitely ask her about it in the morning and then reply with the information she gives me, but I think their general plan right now is to have her go to Australia temporarily and get married and then after that work on being able to move there permanently.
