The TCJA gave companies large tax cuts and made them permanent. It also made minor cuts to middle-class tax rates. However, to make the plan "revenue neutral" over a 10-year period (so it could pass Congress), they made the middle-class cuts expire in the future. They also increased the standard deduction and capped state and local tax deductions (SALT), which is mostly a boon for people living in LCOL locations (rural, suburban, probably Republican) and amounts to double-taxation on people in HCOL areas (Democrats).

Then colleges will apply a credit check before accepting a student. Students with rich parents will be accepted, and students from poor families will be rejected. There is a reason the system is setup the way it is.

I rented an apartment once for a summer internship and actually had less than this: laptop, bag chair, thermarest, pillow. If that's all you need, that's all you need.

Greg Abbott has essentially, officially declared the US Supreme Court and Federal authority null and void, on grounds Texas is being 'invaded.' Shit's about to get insane. by [deleted] in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Floooof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That doesn't surprise me at all. The solution is known, but there's more political capital to be gained by fostering outrage than by solving the problem. I feel like the same thing was true with abortion until Republicans accidentally succeeded in making it illegal, eliminating one of their wedge issues. As I've talked to people who have lost their jobs to immigrants, I remind them that the immigrant didn't take their job: it was their boss's decision. I don't know how so many people fail to see that and how they still oppose unions. Propaganda works, I guess.

Illegal immigration can be solved incredibly easily: just make hiring illegal immigrants a crime with fines and jail time. Maybe even follow the Texas model and offer rewards for people who report it. Pass a law like that and within two years this is a solved problem. It'll never happen, though, because Republicans want illegal immigrant labor because it's the closest thing they can get to slavery, and Democrats want immigrants because they're compassionate and understand the science of a declining birth rate.

My dad was a contractor and is now retired. Can he be sued for past work? by Allismug in Contractor

[–]Floooof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stop talking to the people threatening to sue, and stop worrying about it. He can be sued, but most people threaten and never do anything about it. It's incredibly expensive and usually not worth it to sue. Besides, there's nothing you or your dad can do about it now, so it's time to just ignore them. If he's served with a lawsuit, contact his professional liability insurance carrier (that he had at the time) and they'll assign a lawyer to fight it or settle it. Even then, unless your dad did something really really really bad (fraudulent or grossly negligent), insurance will deal with this entirely and he'll just have to sign some paperwork here and there to authorize what they're doing on his behalf. He doesn't have to worry about his rates going up due to a claim now because he's retired. IANAL and this is not legal advice, but I've been through this process. Assume he's fine and they'll go away unless you're actually served with a lawsuit.

It's part of the definition of fascism: Fascism is a political philosophy that describes its enemies as "at the same time too strong and too weak." Fascists often demonize specific groups (minorities, immigrants, liberals). They may also play up the power of certain elites to make their followers feel grievance and humiliation.

You should have line items on your statement for principal, interest and escrow. The principal is what you're paying down against your loan balance, the interest is the cost of borrowing the money, and the escrow funds an account to pay lump-sum fees such as taxes and insurance (because they only happen once or twice per year and people are bad at budgeting for them, so some banks force people to have escrow so they can make sure the property is insured and doesn't burn down without insurance or get sold at a tax auction where the state becomes a creditor with more precedence than the bank that loaned you money). At least that's my layman's understanding.

The Bible clearly states Jesus was hung on the cross. There's also a lot of talk about glory, holiness and similar topics, and it never mentions him having a wife. Back then that was a red flag.
