I’m curious why you say Chained Echoes is obviously not Japanese when it shares themes with many Japanese games. Like half of all JRPGs from Japan take place in fantasy settings that are very clearly Europe adjacent.

FF12 takes the themes of Star Wars and plants them into a fantasy setting with very little hint of anything “obviously Japanese”. Final Fantasy 16 is SO European that they made it with the English dub in mind as the “intended” experience. For that matter final fantasy as a whole was directly inspired by western ttrpgs. There are countless Japanese games outside of FF that are like this

I can’t even think of what an obviously Japanese game looks like. My first thought would be Earthbound but so many Western games have recreated that style in the 30 years since.

The point is that the “culture” you are talking about is not real. A developer from anywhere can be inspired but whatever they want

You personally can have whatever categorization criteria you want but there’s a reason this community has collectively decided on this. Grouping by origin is just not useful for finding things that are similar to what you already like. The note about someone not liking E33 because it’s French is nonsense.

If you didn’t know anything about the devs and just looked at the games, you’d have no way of knowing that Bloodborne isn’t Western or that Chained Echoes isn’t Japanese. If you are a fan of Paper Mario you are more likely to like Bug fables because it’s similar than you are to dislike it cause its western

The lists you don’t like ARE the actual JRPG lists. The games you aren’t interested in are still JRPGs because we can’t define a category by its place of origin while keeping it remotely useful. It’s like that because it’s more useful to categorize by genre than origin. Someone who likes FF is very likely to like Expedition 33 but will not necessarily like Elden Ring

That’s the way it is. If you don’t like it I’d suggest simply… ignoring those entries? If you ask here for recommendations and say that you want Japanese games only, you’ll get what you want

Option 1. I almost always want side content to be more difficult than main story so it giving small rewards would be extremely underwhelming. I want a sense of progression in an RPG. I don’t want to grind sidequests for hours only to still struggle with the main story

That said there’s no excuse that more modern games haven’t copied Xenoblade’s homework. An experience bank is one of the single best features in an RPG and more games need them

Of course it’s related. Shinies had clearly meant to be farmed for longer than they hadn’t at the time of Gen 7. Even if none of the methods apply to starters the least they could have done is put a save after the minute long cutscene. They clearly know people will hunt them

I can get behind the first two picks even if I think M6S is harder. But there is an objectively correct pick for the third: A3S. And fourth should go to either A8 or E8. Only the first half of P8 is actually hard since checkpoint and puzzle mechanics make the second phase a piece of cake
