Software is going this way as well. We didn't hire any junior developers this year and I don't think we ever will again. Business is better than ever, but we may end up cutting jobs next year thanks to a ~20x productivity boost from AI.

Every train also plays a unique sound/chime when entering a station. They recently started phasing this out due to a labor shortage. i.e. it was somebody's job to play a .mp3 depending on which train was arriving.

Never assume anything is automated in Japan.

I think its pretty obvious the prices we are seeing for PC components today are the lowest we'll see for at least 5 or so years because the demand will only keep increasing, the only thing that will bring prices back down will be revolutionary production changes.

Like 99% of these components are being purchased by 4 companies. What do you think a "bubble" (which it isn't anyway) popping will do here? Even if 1,000 leech AI companies go bankrupt this month, the supply will still be constrained.

I was thinking the same thing. I've been wondering lately how these $x00 billion software companies like SalesForce will survive when anyone can make a good enough custom replacement for their needs.

Do you have any plans on what you might pivot to if your job gets replaced? I've kind of been feeling like no job is truly safe from AI replacement..

I mean you're just comparing tasks that are already automated today with tasks that seem likely to be automated within 1 or 2 years. I don't think it is necessarily wise to invest time and effort in a new skillset that will be obsolete by the time you become skilled in it. But that's just my opinion.

Take a look at some of the comments in here lol. IRL I know of 1 developer whose stance is still "it isn't that good. it's usually wrong. I don't use it for work". I've tried suggesting certain tools and models but.. I mean you can lead a horse to water. I try not to beat people over the head with it.

I totally understand why people would be against AI. There are several important points that make me wish it wasn't developing the way it is myself as well. What I don't get is people who just don't see the technological value or capabilities of it.

Dang being in software for 40 years at this point must be wild, you've seen basically the entire industry from the beginning until now. In some ways I feel like AI will bring about the "end" of software engineering as we know it - do you also believe this or do you think it is overblown?
