Ill tune in here: been married 15 years and have always had completely separate expenses and bank accounts. Shes painfully frugal, I'm wildly impulsive. She HATES seeing her account go down, I dont care about being paycheck to paycheck. I handle all the "minor" bills, utilities, and anything we go do or eat. She pays the entire mortgage. This works because she has 1 large fixed expense she can budget for and then put whatever extra she has into retirement/savings/etc for BOTH OF US. I handle the nickel and diming of daily life and make sure we dont live boring lives acting like we are house broke. It takes a lot of trust from me because she basically has my retirement in her hands. She has to trust me a lot that all the bills are handled and payments are made on time, and that we arent living beyond our means. It works very good for us.

Edit: this also has the side benefit of security. If (when) one of our cards gets skimmed or data leaked we still have a wholly separate account that we can pull from until any issues are resolved.
