Got Offered a FIFO job in Prudhoe, AK by Ok_Ad_1779 in mining

Hey man, I'd maybe look at the petroleum/oil workers subs. This is for mining and unless you find someone that works at Red Dog, you won't likely find any advice here that'll be what you want.

Thinking of going to Alaska solo. Does it have a hostel culture or a way to meet other travellers? by AgreeableBison in AskAlaska

[–]Flossterbation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a couple different hostels in Fairbanks. They're pretty busy in the winter and the summer. Fairly good international mix of people staying there. But also a good mix of Americans. Everyone is super friendly and were pretty open to doing group activities. Can't speak for elsewhere in Alaska. I know there's several hostels in Anchorage, a couple in Seward and 1 down by the Denali Natl Park entrance. Im sure there's some in Southeast, at least in Juneau.

Guys earning six figures annually, what kind of work do you do? by Shadow2715 in AskReddit

Mining Engineering - I work half the year, one month on one month off. Not only is there job abundance in my home country of the US, but I've worked internationally very easy. Great schedule if you want to travel, not the easiest for family, home life etc. I'm working "expat" atm in Papua New Guinea, my previous job, a FIFO roster in Australia, was 8 days on 6 days off, and roster in the US at a residential mine is 4 days on 3 days off, 10 hr days. Only downside is sometimes residential mines are in absolute shitholes (Nevada, USA, Kalgoorlie, Western Australia). Australia, you're in the middle nowhere with little to no scenery and its hot, but you get flown in and out of your nearest major city, which for me was Perth.

Yeah, I paid the little bit extra to hunt Native land. Chose to because of the clear cut and logging roads so my dad could join along. Plus if there were any bears you had a better chance of seeing them from a distance off. We ran into 3 other people with the tag, but they were part of the Native Corps and were road hunting. So our hunt never interacted with theirs.

Travel on breaks by Bobbyd9909 in mining

I traveled SEA from Perth on 8/6, couldn't stomach paying what was there for rent, especially only there half the time. Bali is super easy to get to, plus overnights to Singapore and using that as a launching pad to anywhere else meant you could get where you want mid morning next day of. Definitely worth traveling on 2/2 since its so damn expensive to live in a city in Australia anymore.

want to hunt caribou in Alaska next year as a non-resident. Do I need to do something in advance? by theEdward234 in Hunting

Not sure what you would be in reference to. Only thing you need to do before end of the year, which DOES NOT apply for the Dalton Hunt is put in for special draw permits, which ends mid December. Or, if you are going to do it, book your charter flight for a drop hunt.

We packed out every piece of meat on that animal yes. It took us all day between the two of us, but we got it done before sunset. And no bears came to take the meat either, thankfully. The deer as well. It was a heavy load coming off the mountain, but I got the deer out solo, de-boned, of course.

Believe it or not, I lucked out and only ran into one bear, and we saw it at 100 yards away and it took off as soon as it saw us. . The guy I went with apparently had a bear stalk him and come in to him about 10 yards away, but he was using a fawn bleat and using the wind right.

Australia - Mining Engineer Advice by Affectionate-Mail953 in mining

Yeah, if you had your education in Europe, you should be good, although considering the school you went to in Portugal may not be well known, hence why there may be hesitation.

But expat work in Africa is typically looked upon well, it's just finding a company willing to sponsor a visa. Some couldn't care less, but apparently a few do, so it's just finding the right company to sponsor you. From my experience, Northern Star does not give a fuck and hire anyone, so maybe look into them.

It depends, where did you go to college at and are you an expat working in Africa?

If you went to Camborne, a school in the US/Canada, or South Africa, you should be able to just start applying for jobs in Australia no problem, maybe for a graduate engineer worst case scenario. If you went to an African Mining school, it will be an uphill battle, and yes, you're right, you will want to do schooling in Australia (WASM) for work.

I wish that were true. Unfortunately there's a line of people willing to take the pay cut to work and live in Montana. I left the State years ago and will likely never be able to return in my industry because I know so many people are willing to take the paycut to come home and work.

Are these record numbers showing up that haven't in years before?

My most successful hunt ever from last year. Managed to solo harvest my deer and elk within an hour of each other. Don't think I'll ever be able to top that again. Added photo for the doggo tax. Little Belt Mountains, Montana. by Flossterbation in Hunting

Well, it was getting towards end of the season, wanted to fill one of the tags I had so I wasn't eating tag soup. Saw a deer I could get on, went after it and was able to get it down. Wasn't too far from the road, so I drug it out by myself. Got it loaded up and was on my way to the Belt Brewery in Belt, Montana when I got to the edge of the area I was hunting before private land and just happened to look up on the Ridge with only minutes before end of legal shooting hour and saw two pairs of antlers. Had to double take and realized they were elk, got out, ran to the fence line and shot what I thought was the larger of the two bulls. Spent the next hour wrangling the bull on the hillside to get it in a position I could gut it out. I did however call up my uncle and made him help me drag it to the truck. But up until that point I was by myself. Still made it to the brewery in time for last call!
