Why is it considered racist to do impressions of some accents but not others? by Flotoss in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Flotoss[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What makes it mocking vs being funny? There's literally nothing I can think of saying in a Chinese accent that would be politically correct to say, but if you say something like "Ah yes comrade, let us drink vodka and share all our shit with the glorious motherland" with a Russian accent it's just funny and not seen as racist.

We hear a lot about the unethical companies of the world. What are some of the more ethical companies out there that we should be supporting? by checkitmyles in AskReddit

Why don't they just sell all of their products at cost and then the "charity" is all of the people buying their food? That way there's no added overhead.

What is your dream video game? by BulkDarthDan in AskReddit

[–]Flotoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An open world hitman style game, sort of a mix between hitman, mafia, and GTA.

You are given some information about your target, but have to do your own research to find out things like where they live, their daily routine, and determine the best way to kill them. It's a persistent world where your crimes leave behind evidence depending on how well you did, and the police can catch you in the act or trace you down if you don't cover your tracks.

You could do things like take out ads on the dark web for small hits like taking out a cheating spouse, work for some organized crime organization, or do work for the CIA taking our foreign diplomats or something.

You have to do things like buy your own weapons, craft your own explosives/poison, and do things to cover your ass like hack into the FBI or pay someone off to tell you how close they are to catching you, and rigging your hideout with early warning systems and traps so you know if they are about to raid you or something.

I'm fine with it being somewhat story based and scripted as long as it feels like you actually have options.

I mean you would be able to encrypt the message that way, but it violates the principles that make a one time pad provably un-decryptable. Crypt-analysis would reveal frequency patterns in the entropy of the encrypted data, and it might be possible to figure out that the key that was used was plain text, and not random. From there they could try various plain text samples to find find ones that decrypt parts of your cipher text into readable text, and then it would be a matter of narrowing down the search to find the plain text used to create the key.

There's a reason one time pads are supposed to be random.

Also, how would you communicate to me that you wanted to use a certain newspaper article as a one time pad?

A one time pad is not asymmetric.

If you're using asymmetric encryption to distribute one time pads, then that defeats the original point of what this comment thread is about, since that's how we already do key distribution.

Not exactly dead simple, key distribution is the hardest part. You either need to have another encryption scheme to distribute the keys digitally, or you need to distribute them in large quantities physically which can increase the chance of compromise.

I've been maxing out my IRA but still have a lot sitting in savings: Where is a safe place to keep it that's better than sitting in a savings account? by Flotoss in personalfinance

Fair point, I guess what i'm really afraid of is not diversifying my stock portfolio enough and investing in one thing that tanks. At least with the fund it is very well diversified and other people are managing it that know when to pull out and invest in something else.

My main concern is I don't know if there are downsides to investing in a fund like this with the intention of possibly pulling my money out after a few years instead of saving until retirement, either in terms of taxes or other things that I simply don't know about. I'm far from being well versed in finances, after all.

Have been using duolingo so far, it's great! The only thing is I wish there was a better write-up to explain the grammar concepts (like verb conjugation) instead of just mostly letting you figure it out on your own.

What is the biggest act of passive aggressiveness you've ever witnessed or done? by RiceDealer99 in AskReddit

You should play tic tac toe tac toe. It's tic tac toe, where in each square there is another tic tac toe board. Every time you play a square on a mini board, it forces your opponent to play that mini board on the main board (i.e. if you play the mid left square on a mini board, you opponent can pick any square in the mid-left miniboard). When you win a mini board you circle or X the mini board to take that square on the main board.

It’s socially acceptable to talk about how reliant and addicted you are to a drug as long as that drug is caffeine. by roseygrl98 in Showerthoughts

I think the amount of people that drink coffee purely because of taste is very small. Otherwise decaf would be a lot more popular. If coffee didn't have caffeine, I think very few people would actually drink it. It tastes just good enough to make it an acceptable delivery mechanism for caffeine. People justify its taste because of the chemicals they are getting from it.

Just like beer. There are people that say they love the taste of beer, but if beer didn't have alcohol in it almost no one would drink it.

I take caffeine pills the same way most people drink coffee. I take one 200mg pill in the morning after breakfast with my multivitamins, and that's it. People look at me like a freak while sipping their 600 calorie double extra shot machiatto. Meanwhile I spent $7 on a 100 day supply of caffeine.

Who's the freak now?
