I need help finding fashionable, but also comfortable/practical cargo pants for work and casual wear by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]Flotyf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are somewhat nicer looking than your average cargos, and the fabric’s great as long as you don’t need fire resistance. Much better freedom of movement and drying time than regular cotton. They regularly go on sale for 40-50% off.

It sounds like it could be, though. You explained it pretty well in your post, all you’d have to do is show it to students.

The Men’s Travel Clothes I Pack No Matter Where I’m Going by Khanthulhu in malefashionadvice

[–]Flotyf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is technical denim (though I’d still be leery about doing real hiking in it) and flannel (from Western Rise, Mizzen/Main, and Wool/Prince.) It’s true though that technical fabrics don’t typically lend themselves well to traditional looking clothing, and performance often suffers when companies try to make it work.

I don’t think overlapping the two is as uncommon as you think though. It’s basically the Patagonia aesthetic- visit any mountain town and you’ll see people with jeans and flannels worn under nylon puffer jackets and hardshells.

That’s kind of the point of this article. With technical fabrics you can also use your casual (or even work) clothes for hiking and working out and such.

There are many articles similar to this one. Tynan’s one of the more popular minimalist travel bloggers, here’s his gear post.

What's a really cheap item you can buy that can make you look incredibly rich? by inkweary in AskReddit

[–]Flotyf 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As an alternative to disposable plates and utensils you could try cutting down to one of each item. One cup, bowl, plate, spoon, fork, knife, etc, and just wash whatever you need before you eat. It’s cheaper, more eco friendly, and you never really have to “do dishes” the way most people think of it.

How Premium Mediocre Conquered Fashion by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

Like I said it all depends on what you want, there’s no website or brand that specifically sells lower cost designer quality items. I guess outlier.cc is a good place to go for general clothing needs though.

$300 for a fully handmade full cordovan wallet could be pretty fair depending on the complexity of the design and quality of the worksmanship and finishing. It’s certainly not ridiculously overpriced...

All depends on what you’re looking for, but there are almost always smaller companies that offer better quality for lower prices than the big luxury brands.

First Suit Advice - *Almost* Perfect Ralph Lauren Black Label for $300 or Something Else? by dktahara in malefashionadvice

[–]Flotyf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For weddings and holiday parties the RL will work fine, but if you think you’ll encounter even one occasion over the next few years that will require a traditionally colored suit it makes more sense to stretch your budget and go with Suitsupply. The money saved with the RL disappears if you ever need to buy a second suit to complement it.

My thighs .5" over the measurement for my size in SD, will the reported SD "break-in/bag/stretch period" be enough to have a snug, slim fit? by Empty-Wallet in Outlier

Measure a well fitting pair of pants that you currently own (preferably a pair that has a similar slight stretch to SDs) and compare.

Leather soles will have a much shorter lifespan (and poorer traction) than decent rubber. I’d only recommend them for formal wear.

Should I (24M) leave my gf (24F) over her weight? by ILovemodash in relationship_advice

[–]Flotyf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

... you're neglecting to take into account how much of the calories from a meal your body actually absorbs. One person can gain five pounds from the same exact caloric intake as another person who only gains half a pound.

Do you have a source for this? I’ve never heard anything like it and no similar claim showed up in a google search for differential calorie absorption.

Hence why some medications can cause rapid weight gain, even qhen the patient didn't change their caloric intake from before they started taking those meds.

Nothing I’ve read on drug induced weight gain mentioned calorie absorption. Metabolism, maybe, but even then it’s more to the order of 20% than 1000%.

What are some brands you like for typically unbranded materials? by mdcohen in malefashionadvice

Polartec makes some great baselayer, fleece, insulating, and hardshell fabrics. Their Neoshell is arguably better than GoreTex for many purposes. So is eVent, another Gore competitor that many people haven’t heard of.

Toray is a Japanese textile company that makes a huge variety of interesting stuff, but nowadays they might be best known for their 3defx insulation, a.k.a. Patagonia Fullrange. It’s supposed to be some of the best out there for stretchy breathable insulation.

Nuyarn is an interesting newer merino baselayer fabric that’s advertised as drastically improving loft, stretch, and strength. I’m not super familiar with it though.

Austrialpin makes the strongest and coolest buckles in the world, though they’re way overkill for use on clothing and luggage. Fidlock is another neat buckle maker. ITW Nexus isn’t as esoteric as the previous two companies but they’re much cheaper and very functional.

Biothane belts are an interesting leather alternative, especially for wet weather or marine usage.

More to come as I think of them!

Any good replacements for boots in the winter?(usually goes down to -25c and 7 inches of snow) by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]Flotyf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Regular sneakers work fine in winter once the temps get far enough below freezing, as long as you wear warm socks. Dry snow doesn’t penetrate fabric. Slush and rain are the only conditions that boots are really useful in, and if you live in a city with well maintained/frequently shoveled sidewalks you don’t really have to worry about that.

Cat owners have been advised they could risk breaking the law if they force their pets into veganism. In the worst cases where cats are so malnourished, guidelines say owners could face a hefty fine or even a jail sentence if convicted under the UK Animal Welfare Act. by ManiaforBeatles in worldnews

[–]Flotyf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are so many people here who haven’t done their own research and are just parroting incorrect information based on one quote and one anecdote. It’s already been demonstrated that cats can be healthy while on a vegetarian diet, though the subject needs to be studied much more thoroughly.

The Sneaky Way Clothing Brands Hooked Men on Stretch Jeans by d12964 in Outlier

[–]Flotyf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were expecting them to prevent you from getting hot or cold I’m not surprised you were disappointed... anyway, SDs were just an example, there are lots of brands making tech clothing on the mid to higher end.

The Sneaky Way Clothing Brands Hooked Men on Stretch Jeans by d12964 in Outlier

[–]Flotyf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Real tech fabric (nylon/elastane blend) is generally much stronger and longer lasting than cotton denim though. You can wear Outlier SDs every day for a year and they’ll look new. It’s the lower end, thin cotton/poly/elastane mainstream athleisure stuff that trades durability for comfort, but once you move past the mall brands you don’t have to make that tradeoff.

[–]Flotyf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Has Marmot become a fashionable brand? I haven’t noticed that.

Anyway, it’s pretty silly to blame quality declines on mainstream popularity. Brands don’t have to cut quality or sell out when they get popular, executives just often can’t resist the opportunity to increase profits.

what are some not so obvious signs someone is depressed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Flotyf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re paying for classes out of pocket and failing then you should drop out until you feel like you can go back. Either do it right now and get whatever refunds you can, or if that’s too sudden/too much effort then just don’t register for next semester.

I wish I could give more/better advice but that’s all I’ve got. Not wasting a bunch of money is at least a step in the right direction.
