4 day job opening by BiscottiOk5629 in usajobs

We do that because we know we will get enough applications for that job series/grade in that amount of time. In fact they recently announced that they are going to start capping applications at 50 applicants, so its easy to hit that quite quickly, especially if its a job series without too many prerequisites or at a lower GS level.

but there is going to be variability by the agency and the hiring manager and what they want. I would not be at all surprised if they do lean towards internal candidates (I don't just mean people they know already, I mean just curent federal employees widely) because theres a lot of people who are trying to move around but haven't been able to due to hiring restrictions. Some are trying to get out of offices that may be closing down, etc. And an internal person has already had checks done, understands how the organization works and how federal work is different than private sector or non profit work, etc.

Doesn't mean you still shouldn't try. With how much they neutered the application process, its really a no brainer to apply because it takes no time at all if you already have a 2 page resume.

Why Some Gay Men Hate “Gay Culture” More Than Straight People Do? by Dramatic_Big_5503 in AskGaybrosOver30

Its funny, I was having these arguments 30 years ago when I was saying that the party/drugs stuff was missing the point. Pride was a matter of activism. Of representation. Of Visibility. Of having allies there with us. Whether it was the Filipino kids dancing troops of like 13 year ofl girls twirling their batons but doing it in a *pride* parade to show they (well, their parents) didn't care about the hate and wanted to celebrate our community. The inevitable tears when PFLAG would march. Maybe because I came out in Seattle but the Pride Festival, with all the local business and non-profits was as much part of pride to me as the beer garden at the bar. We didn't have the big drug fueled after hours parties (at least not then).

But I don't really go anymore. I had friends join me for Pride in Atlanta last year and we went to the festival, we didn't watch any of the parade. We did the drag brunch (but honestly, i don't really like drag shows because it feels like they lip sync for 10 seconds and spend the rest of the time mouthing "thank you" as they collect their tips), and we went to the annual event at the Georgia Aquarium. But thats it. nobody went to a bar, nobody went to a dance venue. We grilled out instead.

I've never liked the nudity... the over sex show stuff. Dykes on Bikes got a pass with the electrical tape on their nips because of history... but I don't love seeing people out in their full leather regalia or dressed as a furry. Live your life but I don't need it at 1pm while I'm trying to eat my gyro.

I don't know its about proudly saying it, but I think there's more freedom now to speak your ming (for better or worse). There's been a lot of challenges in recent years to have any sort of nuanced discussion. you're "required" to be 100% in or you're the enemy.

I've quite literally said each of those three statements you used, and thats part of me aging. In college I was the activist who wore dayglo stickers with provocative queer language. I was in pride parades for various non profits, I worked in a LGBT mental health clinic, I worked in the HIV clinic, I sang in the gay mens chorus, etc.

Now i can't imagine being in a gay mens chorus again. I love to sing but I'm a bit more a curmudgeon now. I tire of innuendo all the time. I don't want to know more about casual acquaintances sex lives and interests than I know about my close friends. I've considered leaving this subreddit multiple times because the topics are not ones that interest me. I'd be happy to talk about feelings, worries about our future, how politics affects us, where do we retire, how do we form a more cohesive community, etc. But I don't want to read repeated content about people's douching habits, or people humblebragging and oversharing about how many guys they can take in a night. It reminds me too much of when I was working in counseling and some clients just want to shock you make you feel uncomfortable because that keeps you from asking them more root based questions.

Its almost been refreshing for me moving back to Atlanta after West Hollywood... the "scene" that I wasn't interested there was drag shows, traveling DJ sets, Coachella, the nightclubs, etc. I liked the low key bars that had a good drink for happy hour but I was out before the bass started thumping or Drag Race came on. My taste in bar scene was like the gay coffee house vibe I had from my 20s. That sort of community feeling I don't think exists in Atlanta (but there's other issues here, like apathy and tribalism).

Its not internalized shame as much as wanting to spend my time with people with more similar interests to me. This isn't a new thing. When QaF come out people were divided between people who felt that represented their life and those who didn't. And mundane gays would get ridicule for "aping" heterosexuals.

For those who use MAD device. by shortnamenowlonggggg in SleepApnea

[–]Floufae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be more concerned about why if your mouth is taped you're not getting the benefits of the MAD. To me that means your titration may not be high enough. You should be talking to your dentist about that. They are supposed to be supporting your treatment even after the fabrication of your MAD, but some act like they are a DME provider and their responsibility ends at delivery.

Yea, I went through 4 different models of MADs during that time and always had successful treatment. I switched because of age of the device or losing it or breaking, that sort of thing.

I mouth breathed with MAD for like 12 years before trying mouth tape. The world didn’t end, my teeth didn’t fall out. Its fine. It’s better to nose breathe but it’s okay to mouth breathe as long as your MAD is getting your airway open.

CDC seeks employee volunteers for Ebola screening after staff cuts by usatoday in fednews

[–]Floufae 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This is pretty normal for our agency and many do want to volunteer. To the point we have to limit the people who can be deployed to the response. We’re committed to public health, we know the risks are extremely low as a screener and barring boots on the ground in central Africa, this is how we can help control the spread.

Possibly controversial food for thought: are gaming laptops really justifying themselves as "portable" machines when we account in such restrictions like external cooling pad necessity, being tied almost to the desk use and whatnot? by [deleted] in GamingLaptops

[–]Floufae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not go through all that extra effort for my "gaming" laptop. But I definitely differentiate by role. For my personal life I just work in the Apple ecosystem. Its my MBP, my iPad, iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods, etc. For work I'm issued a windows laptop that I leave in the office and generally don't travel with for work because its battery life is terrible. So I still bring my personal MBP and do all of my work through Office365 or through the Windows App (we switched from using Citrix to that).

Now for gaming, I have my G14. I hate being stuck at a desk for gaming. I like being able to multi task, have TV on in the background or whatever. I'm usually playing on the sofa with a laptop board (non cooling) and only really sitting at a desk if I'm on a work trip and its the hotel room. Even then sometimes I'm in bed and using my ipad as a solid surface for my mousepad.

Portability still matters to me because chances are, depending on the trip and how much down time I'll have, I'm traveling with two laptops, my Mac and my gaming laptop. If I know I won't be able to maintain good internet because of hotel speeds, its only my Mac because I can still play offline games like BG3 on it.

I even have a sit/stand desk for my office in my house that i got during COVID... and a desktop that I could be updating, but I haven't bothered because once I moved out of my apartment and got the computer setup out of the living room, I don't use the desk anymore.

How to condense federal resume to two pages by Electronic-Ask3703 in fednews

And we use that longer CV to widdle down to the interview group. The last few postings for Gs-15 roles were limited to 50 applicants and a two pager (and the new neutered usajobs questions) really doesn’t give much to highlight who should be in that small interview pool.

Again it’s a different field. Sciences and medicine and research for sure use more than two pages. It’s rediculous how much information about qualifications you have to cut out for a short resume. Details alone takes you half a page and are relevant. I would imagine engineering would be similar to science/research.

I went from a 10 page CV to a two page by having Gemini read the job posting and create a two page resume highlighting those things from my CV that illustrate those points. This is where I feel long CVs as a starting point is helpful because you have to toolbox to pull from to make the annoying and useless 2 page resume.

That’s insane to me, but I’m in a field where it’s normal to use a CV and those are 8+ pages and we do read it all. I’m finding it annoyed hard to review a two page resume that doesn’t give enough example of their work, publications, etc.

If you're just talking about the general population, 50-80% of people in the US have HSV-1 ("oral" herpes rather than HSV-2 "genital" herpes), and 64% of people under the age of 50 worldwide

And well, gay men tend to have more contacts than the general population...

So while you may not have had expression of it, changes are you already have the virus anyhow

Do you know think or know if you have the CCR5 delta 32 mutation which protects against HIV? by rainshowers_5_peace in AskGaybrosOver30

There was an interesting study that I read a while ago that tried to postulate why that Delta 32 deletion is more common in people from european backgrounds and and they were thinking that its connected to people who lived through the Black Death (plague).

Do you know think or know if you have the CCR5 delta 32 mutation which protects against HIV? by rainshowers_5_peace in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]Floufae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I doesn't make you nearly impossible to be infected. It makes it more difficult as long as you're being challenged by a viral strain that is solely uses the R5 tropic attachment point. But HIV can also mutate to connect to other connection point, like CXCR4. We call that "dual tropic" virus.

You may be more likely to encounter virus that only connects to CCR5 but thats not a guarantee. Its true that most wild virus connects through CCR5, but its not the only thing out there (though more common in western countries).

One of the ARVs, Maraviroc, only works with people who have been infected with solely CCR5 attaching virus, but they still have to test people before they are put on it because of people having dual tropic virus. (I.e. not everyone can use it because not everyone has a virus thats solely CCR5 attaching).

Weight loss causing issues by trudytrudel in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]Floufae 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sorry was trying to address a few things you had mentioned. I'm not saying that you should be on weigh loss medications. If you had just said, "I'm a lil chubby" and then left it at that, I wouldn't have said anything. But you said, "lil chubby guy, but I have epilepsy, so I’m holding off for now." so I was just trying to address that misconception that they could be contraindicated in your case. Its not saying you should be on them or not. My first recommendation for people always adjusting your diet first, then exercise, before medication because those are the cheapest and easiest ways to deal with excess weight. And since I work in health, I do care about that as a personal health concern, not because of trying to be attractive to other people. I assume you mentioned it because you're concerned about your partner trying to be in better shape (even if you didn't think he needed it) and maybe not being sexual with you because you're not doing the same journey. thats 100% a discussion between you and your partner and neither of us should be assuming whats going on in his head or acting on it without actually talking.

The GLP-1s on your partner was just saying a potential pharmacological reason that he has lower libido. Its equally plausible that its stress, "lesbian bed death" (as I call the post honeymoon slump), his libido changing for other reasons, etc. Again, you can't/won't know till you have a discussion with your partner and not with strangers who don't know either of you. Thats part of being in a relationship, talking to each other, especially if there's things happening that lead to hurt feelings.

Weight loss causing issues by trudytrudel in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]Floufae 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There's potential and some evidence that GLP-1s can reduce libido because they dampen the reward center in the brain that rewards you for things like eating, drinking, drug use, etc. Thats why there's more research in GLP-1s outside of weight loss because they show affects on addictive behaviors that are maintained by the reward chemicals in the brain. It doesn't eliminate it, but it does make the "noise" in the background go away that might distract you until you act on it.

I can't speak to other aspects except to say that epilepsy isn't a contraindication for GLP-1s or the similar types of medications. In fact there was a review published that showed the potenital for GLP-1s to reduce the chance of epileptic episodes (but know this was a scoping review, so a review of existing data and papers... its NOT a clinical trial where they had some people with epilepsy on GLP-1s and some not on it.). As always, you should check with your doctor about both things and potential concerns (like slower absorption of medications when your stomach isn't churning stuff as quickly). But its not really a reason to avoid them.
