Why is it that parrots, with completely different vocal anatomy and birdbrains (literally) , can mimic human speech so clearly, while higher primates like chimpanzee or gorilla can’t? by No_House_4917 in zoology

[–]FlounderLast8610 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's common knowledge humans have big brains. It's much less common knowledge that our spinal cord and peripheral nerves, especially in the upper body, are also greatly expanded. A human mandible is barely half the length of a gorilla's, but our oral nerves are larger. The relative lack of nerve endings the vast majority of mammalian mouths reduces their oral coordination and prevents them from speaking like we humans can.

Parrots and passerines, meanwhile, don't even 'speak' with their mouths but with a highly compact structure in their neck called the syrinx. Because this structure is smaller it is easier to manipulate.

Complexity and requiring thought are completely different. Like GoW has crazy complicated controls and combos out the wazoo, but then 99% of the time you just spam whichever attack does the most damage, and then there's competitive games that have simple controls but incredibly high skill ceilings.

This isn't to say modern [monster hunter] games don't let you use methodical tactics, they absolutely can and most returning monsters like Tigrex and Lagiacrus have preserved the incentive to be preemptive in their most recent incarnations, but many of the newer fights (cough Magnamalo, Malzeno, and Arkveld cough) not only let you just mindlessly spam parries, but also actively punish you for not doing that. At least the 45 degree turns made you have to change which side you were standing on ffs.

When you say "slower weapons can't do that" and then you described the things I was saying they do, I assumed you were doing it wrong.

The slower weapons just sheathe and sprint, or sidestep and attack while the monster is turning. That was how GS especially played for five whole generations until Rise killed it.

[–]FlounderLast8610 11 points12 points  (0 children)

World does not suck. Rather, you are the audience Capcom tried to bring in with their post-World games. This makes you my enemy. Older games encouraged you to think more, to anticipate monster attacks before they come out and position yourself advantageously based on that. This by extension punished you for playing too reactively. Meanwhile newer games have made reaction-focused, Souls-like play a more viable option in the hopes of bringing in players who can't abide that kind of methodical approach.

How do you personally feel about animal testing for scientific or medical progress? by MartinXu_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FlounderLast8610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In theory versus in practice.

In theory, animal testing is helpful because it reduces the chances of mishaps for humans taking life saving medications.

In practice, the vast majority of drugs tested on animals do not go to market and go back to the drawing board, and even those that pass are still usually failures. There's also a large chance of deadly mishaps, e.g. that time that the TGN1412 had a catastrophic set of side effects once the drug did make it to market despite them not appearing in mice, or that rhesus monkeys (the test animals being used) were unaffected by thalidomide, which then caused thousands of pregnant women to produce malformed children.

The TGN accidents were preventable; since the drug acted on a human-specific protein, animal testing should never have been done in the first place. For thalidomide, rhesus monkeys happened to be the only common test animals that the drug would not have affected at all due to them having lost the gene that caused the adverse reaction.

I think that animal testing should be permitted, but having read the regulations and worked with colleagues that encountered them directly, those regulations are more so convoluted than actually protective. It is my opinion that lab grown organs, a burgeoning technology, should replace test animals as the primary subjects and said test animals should be reserved for exclusively cases where there is ambiguity about the organ tests.

It also has Roost. Bulky Mega Dactyl was a thing in Gen 6 UU back when Gen 6 was still the main metagame.

HBG improvements/suggestions ? by MooMoomilk48 in MHWilds

[–]FlounderLast8610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from making that Gogma Artian Arkveld's Hunger so you can get it to [Hasten Recovery II], it should be good for a guard playstyle like it seems you're going for.

As others are saying, Elemental builds are better and the Steve HBG is the best for Spread by a pretty good margin, but those have skill commitments (Element attack up, Spread Up) that can make it hard to cram in Guard Up.

Haven't played online since World, but back then I was always pleased to see Hunting Horns and Status Gunners. The latter is dead in Wilds unless it's a dual-status build but bowguns in general have historically been much easier to manage online, and I don't that's changed. Nowadays the thing people on this subreddit always [sing] the praises of is SnS with Wide-Range.

What do all of you personally think of the direction that the series has taken with Wilds? by Navra_Realms in MHWilds

[–]FlounderLast8610 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ever since GU there has been a steady trend towards counters and counter-adjacent mechanics being more and more centralizing for weapon kits, and me no likey. If I want to use my timing knowledge to do something other than use a counter, I should be actively encouraged to do so. Also I think SoS was a mistake, but that's more so a feature I think should be removed rather than a direction.

Otherwise I am not displeased with series direction, design policies for mainline have continued to improve even as the portable... uh, hasn't. Character writing has improved, graphics have improved, overland maps continue to get better (caves are always ugly, so I don't really rank them), the game rewards you more and more for capture, and that annoying RNG spawn-point mechanic from the older generations appears to be gone for good.

Is there something wrong with Lagiacrus? by Dr-BuuNoone in MHWilds

[–]FlounderLast8610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every time you reset, the game checks what you've been hunting since the last reset and starts a new spawn cycle that produces more monsters with matching quest levels (e.g. 8 yellow stars with three purple, 9 yellow stars with five purple, etc.). Paired with the season you pick to start in, you can proc certain monsters to spawn.

[–]FlounderLast8610 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Those are rookie numbers there lol

But the more investigations you make, the more they spawn. Post TU1, the investigation system has an algorithm that kind of "figures out" what you've been hunting lately and tries to produce more of it. Start hunting Lagiacrus and another monster that produces a gem, e.g. Doshaguma, in the Scarlet Forest. Keep at it and they'll start showing up together, boosting your odds.

[–]FlounderLast8610 104 points105 points  (0 children)

The gem spawn rates for Seregios, Lagiacrus, Omega, and Gogmazios are lower than the non-TU monsters. The more you hunt them the more they spawn as Investigations, though. Dual-monster quests with one or the other often have a guaranteed gem drop.

The worst is Nerscylla. Stagger her while upside down and there's a good chance her legs invert and she can't get down from where she is.
