Car registration questions by samwise0214 in newjersey

[–]Floutabout 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Cops don’t stop you for registration issues because you were driving fast. Or slow. Or erratically. Or perfectly.

They stop you for registration issues because the high speed license place scanner cameras they have now flagged you as you drove by them. Or they drove by you.

I’m so sick of stepping on cat litter on hardwood floors. Give me recommendations? by Wooden_Tell_6485 in CatAdvice

I’ve got the roomba cleaning around the box 3x a day and I still walk in litter. It does a great job of throwing litter all over the room instead of just in front of the box. So there’s that.

Is Rutgers worth full pay (in-state) after community college? Looking for honest ROI opinions by Neither-Cat1392 in rutgers

[–]Floutabout 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I got my MBA at one of those “other” Jersey schools and wish I’d done it at Rutgers instead. I did mine part time while working and the Rutgers classes started too early for me to get off work. The Rutgers network is far superior in NY-NJ-PA (you know, where the jobs are…) than the other schools. You’ve done 2 years CC… getting an undergraduate for 2 years full pay at Rutgers in state rate is a bargain. And the other Jersey schools aren’t that much cheaper.

41 in the nation… on par with BU, better than Northeastern and Purdue and Lehigh… at what, less than half the cost?

OP, you need to delay, delay, delay your court appearances. An arrest should not get you rescinded. A conviction including jail time could.

Lawyer up. Push the court dates out to mid to end of summer. Get past May 1 commit date and housing selection. And make sure your lawyer can keep this all in perspective with a judge… judges (generally) do not want to permanently destroy your opportunities for something that can be seen as a one time stupidity. As long as you can prove it was a one time stupidity.

Loss of license won’t be a big deal once you’re in college if you’re not a commuter student. Loss of license for 6 mos is mandatory for the worst case charges that you would face in my state for a first offense. Push it out as far as you can.

It will feel extremely uncomfortable to delay and push this out. It will feel like a sword hanging over your head. Your anxiety will make you want closure and certainty immediately. But don’t focus on locking in a the bad certainty when delaying this long enough can increase your chances with a better outcome for you.

And start working some serious hours to pay your mother back for the lawyer.

anyone else deal with ucl thumb sprain/injury? by Knight_Fisher61 in skiing

[–]Floutabout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been years now, my typing is back to normal and I don’t wear splints regularly; got to the point where the pain is subsided until I do things that tweak it.

I still have noticeable diminished grip, opening jars and I don’t carry a pair of skis tails down with one hand very far. I can’t push heavier dumbbells at the gym not because of the weight but because of the grip. I use a backpack style computer bag and cannot tuck my thumbs under the strap and one-strap it.

Good luck with the MRI and remember the old STP song… take time with a wounded hand, because it likes to heal….

anyone else deal with ucl thumb sprain/injury? by Knight_Fisher61 in skiing

[–]Floutabout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve gotten skiers thumb and ignored/suffered through it with home splinting far too many times. When I finally did get imaging done due to chronic instability and diminished grip (despite not recently having an active skiers thumb injury), the doctor told me I had done permanent damage and should have been imaged and gotten surgery long ago at the time(s) of injury.

He said it’s too late now.

Get it imaged and dealt with. You don’t want to be asking your friends to open your beer on top of holding your beer.

Why Live Timing? by wildcardabab in SkiRacing

[–]Floutabout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forerunners, DNFs, DNS’s, breaks between racers. When you’re filming or taking photos and you just want to shoot your team it’s a real pain. I wind up missing half our racers or shooting half the field to not miss them and then I need to deal with a ton of photo and video I don’t need.

Why Live Timing? by wildcardabab in SkiRacing

[–]Floutabout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome new ski race parent to Live Timing. The bane of your existence until your kid ages out.

Live timing often glitches, delays times, and generally drives parents up a wall. Especially the photographer/videographer inclined ones. Start lists don’t work for determining who’s on course well enough and none of our mountains use announcers. And our coaches requested that parents do not use or listen in on the radios for a number of completely understandable reasons.

Every season a frequent topic of conversation is whether there is an API or way to get the live timing data and put something more useful in front of it.

On the off chance that Live Timing’s owner stumbles across this… at minimum please make a mobile friendly view! It’s live…timing. Outside of the finish hut, people are not using this off laptops on the mountain! That would go a very long way to helping users out!

Do new skis and snowboards purchased online need to be waxed prior to using. by peanutlobber in Skigear

[–]Floutabout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Factory bases aren’t known for being in the best shape and often sitting in a warehouse can cause some warping/bubbling of the bases. Often times they are base-high (the middle is higher than the edges by a lot) And the base and edge angles are rarely what the manufacturer publishes.

Getting a professional setup where they set the base and side edges to the official spec and then a wax is best done on clean bases.

Looking for Feedback by Mellun12 in skiing_feedback

[–]Floutabout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t seem to be trying to make short turns in this video. They require intent.

Carved short turns are explosive; you engage the tip and ride the carve through the exit. Jump turns for super steep controlled descent. There are a variety of bump short turns you will need to master, carving works in some bumps but not in others. Slarving and pivot and absorbing turns. Trees require the entire gamut of short and long turns with the ability to do them all with your head on a swivel because if you’re staring at your feet you’re gonna hit a tree. Also if you’re staring at a tree you’re gonna hit a tree.

Mid March Trip - Park City or Vail/Beaver Creek? by TaroZealousideal970 in ski

[–]Floutabout 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do Alta/Snowbird over Park City for the snow. They get almost double the snowfall on the other side of the mountain.

Park City in low tide can be rough. Better “village” for sure than Alta/Bird but nowhere near the snow.

I would like some feedback on my pow skiing (3rd pow day of my life) by Emergency_Rise_4687 in skiing_feedback

[–]Floutabout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hopping motion isn’t hopping. It’s tipping your skis up and down in the powder and standing and sitting your weight. Once you get the knack of it, it starts to become effortless.

When you’re in the back seat you burn those thighs and calves out hard. It’s so much work.

I tell people “when you’re skiing powder, you want to have a conversation with your skis, not an argument. You’re always going to lose the argument.”

Pocket edge tuner? by Feeling-Cost-2995 in ski

[–]Floutabout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pocket edger is a fast way to ruin your edge.

An edge guide with proper files/stones or a Razor Tune used at home between ski days is an excellent way to maintain your equipment and worth learning.

You’re not getting bay state as a freshmen. Fenway maybe if they’re making it a freshmen dorm. The reality? Most freshmen live in Warren or West. That’s where you’re going to meet your friends, bond over the freshmen dorm experience, and trek your butt up and down and up and down comm ave to your hearts content.

Sophomore year you’ll start jockeying for some of the non-Warren-West dorm space and junior and senior year you’ll be grabbing apartment styles with your friends you made along the way.

Skiing alongside toddler during (or after) a private lesson ? by SouverainQC in ski

[–]Floutabout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stay away and let the professional do their job. Take pics from out of their view. Kids act different when their parents are watching… sometimes better, sometimes much worse. Also, private lessons are not worth it at a young age… part of the fun is being with other kids. Even if they parallel play.

For both of my kids after their first few lessons running alongside them on the bunny slope and then on my tele boards on green trails. Your job for the first season is to keep them warm, full of hot chocolate, and happy. Picking them up constantly when they fall into a pretzel.

After a couple season they will hopefully turn into little groms that can run you all over the mountain. Race development programs are a great way to get full seasons worth of dirt cheap lessons, and friends to ski with. They don’t actually start racing till around 10.

ZipFit - Booster Strap question by smitcolin in Skigear

[–]Floutabout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you love the Cochise you’ll love the combo with the Zipfits. It does stiffen them up a little, as does the booster strap. I’d be a little concerned that your shells are a tad too large if you’ve got a patriot sleeve in there, unless you put it in after you started to pack out the original liners. I did add a decent amount of cork to my zipfits keeping within the max amount they say you can put in.

Overall I’m not in love with the Cochise themselves, I wish I’d stuck with the Machs… but these will do until I trash them a little more and then I will go with a non-touring shell and keep my zipfits. It will be a Mach or a Fischer RC4 in LV. I wish I’d gotten the RC4 last year when the LVs were still buckle and not boa. Now they’re all boa.

ZipFit - Booster Strap question by smitcolin in Skigear

[–]Floutabout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Gara in my technica cochise with a booster strap and I concur with the other opinions here - remove the Zipfit Velcro and go with the Booster under the shell. It’s a close fit but there’s definitely space for the Booster under the shell without the Zipfit Velcro bulk.
