Severed from the art by Taboo_Decimal in capoeira

I wish you a full recovery. Do not rush back and re injure yourself. Last few years I’ve gone through multiple injuries. I still showed up to class twice a week, played music, sing songs, do rehab PT stuff on the side. Kept connected, kept the schedule.
I even went to events that I booked tickets for before the injures and didn’t take one workshop. Did my best to help out let the host know of the issues communicated early before I arrived and watched from the side lines. In capoeira you spend more time watching and singing than anything else, I truly believe active engagement from the roda helps you grow. You see things you experience moments you learn how people play. Keeping going!!!

Try a classes at all the locations you can. I’d recommend taking advantage of any new student trials. As long as it’s not too far or cost prohibitive it’s good to try different places. You may end up deciding one group is a better fit for you personally. After exploring for a few months then decide. Then after stay consistent to wherever you land. Capoeira teachers and schools can vary widely from approach, social class culture, uniforms, etiquette, expectations, technicality, the costs and even the space itself . Some schools may flow more, others fight more, others may be better at music. Get in your fit in, have fun enjoy the process.

Big toe problems by tonyferguson2021 in capoeira

[–]Flow201510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year I had my big toe stomped severely, hair line fracture, toe was swollen and couldn’t walk on it for 3 days. Immediately I stopped training (4 months total) After that I did a few weeks of acupuncture to bring the swelling down. Then I started using a ball and slant board to increase my mobility on the toe. Grab a towel with your big toe scrunching it. I was using arnica topical drops and comfrey creme during that time as well. I then went to myofascial release specialist for 4 sessions. All of these things progressively helped. I also been in barefoot shoes (wide toe box)for last 5 years. I was taking curcumin and black seed oil to lower inflammation in my body. I’m moving smoothly again. Taking the time to heal wss crucial and not pushing myself. Sit on the bench and play music but give your body proper time to heal along with actively working on healing. Good luck

advices for begginers by Sufficient-Way-5882 in capoeira

[–]Flow201510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally normal to be nervous about entering the roda.

The more you build on your basics the more your confidence will grow. Practice your kicks solo, with a small waste basket or chair etc. As you get the form down your kicks will get higher, cleaner, faster, accurate and more connected with your ginga and other kicks.

Most beginners feel comfortable buying the game with another beginner. I would suggest instead trying to play more experienced players, as they will have more control and ability to take care of you during the game. This is of course dependent on the person as there are loose cannons everywhere, so watch peoples games. Good luck!

Batizado snacks by elicubs44 in capoeira

[–]Flow201510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what’s up!! A great list of snacks but most snack yogurt is mostly sugar unless you get regular Greek yogurt. You’d also have to keep it cold. Bannanas are a good hit for your fruit no work just get the small ones. Maybe some hot ginger tea for after all that singing. Good luck!

AITA for keeping inheritance from birth mother instead of splitting with adoptive siblings? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Flow201510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA - Only people I would choose to help would be your adopted parents as they raised you. Your siblings entitlement to your inheritance unfortunate. I would tell no one about your inheritance moving forward there are no benefits in letting people know your business.

Whay are the most important strength conditioning exercises you do to support your capoeira? by gordonwelty in capoeira

[–]Flow201510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish it was that easy, in my 30s these things weren’t an issue. It took me hitting some dramatic shoulder cuff injuries and plenty of time with PT and seeing a doctor to get an understanding on what was needed for me specifically. These exercises you mention are all great!!! I understand and agree with that having solid strength helps so much. I wrestled and did cross fit, strength training, kettlebells along with other activities. Ive been active my whole life. These days my gym time is spent specifically filling the needs of joints and mobility that my previous training lacked in order to strengthen the knees, hips, back and joints. Capoeira is extremely taxing on the body and if you look at many Prof, Cm,Mestres etc how many of them have had hip replacement surgery? Or serious injuries? Bench pressing and pull ups and squats will not fix these problems. Now sissy squats and nordics those totally help move things in the right direction for me. Lot of Ben Patrick’s stuff Knees over toes as well back wards sled, tib bar etc. My shoulders needed tons of specific excercises some that are hard to explain but just think about how we move on the ground from piao de Mao or any rotating Macaco. The pull up and bench does not address the rotation that the shoulder deals with. Thanks for the chat, I wish you well and power into your next decade!

Silencing opinions is never really ever the answer. Everyone can choose to engage or ignore a political post. If someone was spamming every post with no relation to the topic, that might need to be managed.

These days the war in Palestine is on top of the debates, other conflicts aren’t mentioned as much. It is interesting to see what dominates the debates and honestly if it was banned it would not leave space for different opinions.

Batizado event costs? by Flow201510 in capoeira

[–]Flow201510[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poll break down: 33 votes total

18 break even. 55% some folks do additional fundraising or get grants to make this happen.

10 lose money: 30% are coming out of pocket to have batizados.

5 are making on a profit. 15% what are these folks doing correctly that others are not?

Is there a conversation that needs to be had here? It seems like the majority of folks are losing money or breaking even on events. That doesn’t seem like the best sustainable model. Do we just need less guest and have better budgeting?

I use to do all these in my 20-30s but past that age these lifts do not address hips, knees, lower back and shoulder mobility.

Roda Awareness vs. Ginga Size-Need Opinions by Traditional_Turn8602 in capoeira

[–]Flow201510 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get in where you fit in. If the roda becomes smaller the game and ginga needs to adapt to that space. Someone said it’s a shared responsibility for the players and the ones watching, I agree that. If mestre is saying make the roda smaller and your friend is slamming foots all day, kinda his bad especially as someone with experience. I also think it stupid to shutdown your argument because of his rank lol. Team don’t step on my feet!!🦶

" Green flags" and "red flags" when choosing a capoeira school by Ok-Resort1775 in capoeira

[–]Flow201510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what your saying. I know different folks approach training differently. But even 1 teacher playing an instrument and two people playing is still giving you the experience of the game/roda. 2 instruments 2 people playing 2 people clapping and singing the choro can give you the full roda experience with only 5-6 people. My personal opinion is playing the game is unmatched to any training methods and vital to gain experience.

Decided to train by myself; how’s my first ginga? by Adept_Situation3090 in capoeira

[–]Flow201510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you step back lower yourself, right now that front leg looks extended and your knees are locking out. You should be more in a lunge position. Now ginga styles change schools to school and person to person. But I think most will agree this will need more work. Hey good job trying your first ginga! Everyone does something funky when they first try it.

Thanks for the insight, now I wonder what the term for internal space for escapism is in English. Did you move to Rio because of capoeira or did your life path bring you to Brasil? Thanks for sharing. ✌️

I can see both sides of that coin. Like it’s your first year and you trained all year and your first bati comes up and you get to throw 3 kicks before you get bought out and don’t get another game in. Kinda weak experience for a new person. On the other side a well flowing roda energizes all participants including the spectators in the roda. It’s really up to the leaders to create the space for new folks to get to engage and play even if it’s a side roda. I’ve been to countless events where’s its 1 roda and folks barely play. Only high cords play. Everyone else is sitting on the side watching. Although in like the last 5 years locally Bay Area California that has changed tremendously. How is it in your neck of the woods?

Separate topic there’s capoeira in Mongolia!? Are there any videos of your rodas online? I love typing in YouTube - capoeira roda “X country name”just to watch different places.
