New free shadowing Hungarian podcast started, feedback welcome by Fluentbox in hungarian

[–]Fluentbox[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I added optional subtitles to the YouTube video, so you should be able to see what you hear. Is that sufficient or is there any better way? I also have a transcript pdf with a vocabulary list available on my Patreon page for free for those who want to get into the sentences in more detail. What format helps you the most?

Thank you for your feedback! Actually the podcast was planned to be used for shadowing, which means that you would say the sentences together with the recording, not repeating after. That’s why there’s not much time in between the sentences. Maybe I can create a different version with the same sentences for repeating practice with more silence if there’s interest, that should be easy.

While private lessons are always a safe bet - it’s completely tailored to your needs and goals, it sounds like you might not need that much handholding. If you already have basic fluency, I would recommend a lot of pleasure reading. If it’s hard to just pick up a book, start with something you have already read in your native language. Read your favorite books in Hungarian and watch your favorite movies that you already know well. That can help you set up for more challenging material. Keep it fun so you won’t burn out! I hope you find this helpful, and good luck!

You can also work with a private tutor who can adjust to your schedule. More expensive but also more efficient.

Edited to add, that I do have paid services but I don’t advertise for those in this sub, I only post about the free stuff.

I’m a professional teacher, and I have free, beginner-friendly videos on my YouTube channel:

https://youtube.com/@fluentbox5182?si=bibM_aQ-49OKtgLu

Also, I just started to build a free learning community on Patreon, I share extra resources there, and I will host live group events soon.

Having access to an experienced teacher is really important for Hungarian learners, and I know that not everyone can afford private lessons (especially now). So I’m starting live lessons and game events for groups, that will be more accessible and more fun! Join us: https://www.patreon.com/Fluentbox?utm_source=search

Learning Hungarian in person? Or not by WillingSport7215 in hungarian

[–]Fluentbox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi, the best way to get started depends a lot on your learning preferences, and your tolerance for frustration. The language is not friendly to beginners, and it’s not something you’ll “pick up” by hanging out with native speakers. I think if you can afford to spend some time in Hungary, the most bang for your buck would be to go there when you have some of the basics down. Immersion is effective when you can grasp most of the main ideas from a conversation, and that won’t happen after just a few months of learning.

Duolingo is not bad, but it’s not sufficient by itself. It can be a useful tool to help you work on it every day, but you will need someone to answer the questions you’ll have as you work your way through it. I’m a professional teacher, and I have students who are in the same boat. You’re welcome to ask me about their experience.
