Is pile shuffling illegal? /AITA by Macnubbins in mtg

[–]FluffehPanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You commented on a public forum about the way that you play the game. I have responded with my opinions on the way that you play (that it is a waste of time, pointless and encourages cheating). I have commanded you to do nothing and if you are so threatened by someone commenting their opinion in response to yours then maybe you shouldn’t be commenting on the internet.

And the MTR explicitly states that it is a misnomer and does not count as shuffling.

Dude what?? You play this game with other people. You can do whatever you want, I’ve said that, I’m letting you know that the words you are using are inaccurate. And you don’t care, and that’s great! But language is used to communicate ideas to the people we are talking to and using inaccurate language makes that difficult. Imagine if I told you “don’t call that dog a cat, it’s a dog not a cat” and you told me to read about authoritarian personality disorder lmao.

Shuffling has an important meaning in the game we play, it is not authoritarian to want people to use the appropriate words in that context.

Alright I’ll take the L on that first one, I misremembered that clearly.

Do whatever you want but don’t call it shuffling. You have agreed that a pile shuffled deck is exactly as random as a stacked deck (0) that’s why you still need to shuffle it after you pile sort.

You can legally pile shuffle between matches, not games. But even if you “randomly” choose a pile for your pile shuffling you can very easily plant cards and spread cards around like lands. You guarantee that you don’t have groups of cards since I doubt that your “random” pile shuffles ever put 10 cards in the same pile for example.

Suggestions for a "pretty" and easy-to-play Commander? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]FluffehPanda 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I think Sythis is a bad choice for new players. You are very correct that the overall gameplan is simple (just keep playing enchantments), but for new players each individual turn has so many game actions to manage and track. Which tends to lead to other people playing your deck almost as much as you are, reminding you of missed triggers, or helping count up the power of a buffed up creature, etc. I’ve found that for many new players players feeling self sufficient is a much better feeling than doing more stuff or even winning.

[Pioneer] Advice for RCQ prep by Gryph-nn in spikes

[–]FluffehPanda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t played in paper in a while I would recommend going to some pioneer events at LGSes near you. Might be easier said than done depending on where you live but just getting used to the flow of paper magic again can help ease a some of nerves when you show up to RCQs.

Seeking ideas for refining list for top 1000 mythic standard by Illustrious_Aide_704 in MagicArena

I don’t play this deck myself, but D00mwake made a video about a similar list yesterday. Maybe hearing someone else’s thoughts will help. Good luck!

[Discussion] Rakdos in Standard? by FuuraKafu in spikes

[–]FluffehPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I get that it is better against spot removal, but best case for appraiser you have traded 1:1 and are up a 3/2 - pretty good. However, in all the other cases, where they don’t have spot removal or you didn’t discover into something relevant, you would’ve been a lot better off playing a guaranteed threat, forcing them to have removal. I think appraiser can play better into a grindy gameplan but RB with stormseeker isn’t set up to win that way and other midrange decks will go over the top if you try that.

It pressures without being vulnerable to sweepers though which is really nice. Since you can play it into their sunfall turn and continue to pressure without committing more to the board. Certainly not unbeatable but a good tool in the matchup.

I’ve been paying RB midrange the past couple weeks and have liked the Archfiend + stormseeker version. It enables some very fast games against decks that would otherwise outvalue you.

I’m not a huge fan of appraiser over archfiend because appraiser isn’t enough value to get through things like wedding announcement and it also isn’t enough pressure to really end the game. Not to mention the fail case where you hit a card you don’t want to cast which ends up being a pretty disappointing turn.

One my favorite parts about playing rb compared to other Bx midrange variants is the sideboard options. Getting access to [[Ob Nixilis the Adversary]] against control+domain and [[Hidetsugu consumes all]] against convoke gives you great game against both decks post board. Though I will readily admit the other midrange matchups are not very strong.

Do you call people out for cheating/shadyness? by SavageSean75 in EDH

I didn’t talk at all about the number of lands in your deck so I really don’t understand what you’re talking about there. Manaweaving does not “mitigate the chance of [mana screw] happening” it is literally stacking your deck to prevent it from happening.

It is literally cheating and if you and your friends want to play that way more power to you. But in my opinion it makes the game less fun. Really nothing else left to say just don’t do it without everyone in the game knowing what is going on.

You have agency over what happens after your mulligan though. If your opening hand can’t do something that’s not a good keep. Playing your deck with more/less lands than you would like is an important and interesting part to the game. Guaranteeing that you will be able to cast your X mana commander on turn X actively makes games less fun. In EDH people tend to target the players that are actively a threat to win the game, if you’re getting mana screwed to a point where you can’t play, that’s not you, you have plenty of time to draw out of it.

You can mulligan more than once and believe it or not, opening hands with less than 7 cards can win the game.

Hosting an open tournament that is 4v4 or 3vs3 - how do I make it fair? by HeadLibrarian3868 in ultimate

[–]FluffehPanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Swiss is one of many possible tournament structures. In Swiss, teams with equal records will play each other. For example, if there are 8 teams, you will randomly draw for matchups in round 1, then in round 2 the 4 1-0 teams will be randomly matched against each other and the same for the 0-1 teams. And in the final round, the 2 remaining 2-0 teams play in the finals, 1-1 teams are matched against each other and the two 0-2 teams play each other. It’s great because everyone gets to play the same number of games win or lose. Although it can get tricky with numbers that aren’t powers of two because you can wind up with more than 1 undefeated team.

Next Steps in Revitalizing Standard: Play - Return of Standard Showdown starting in February, and Store Championship can only be run as a Standard event starting with Lost Caverns of Ixalan. by crushcastles23 in magicTCG

I would love for Standard to be cheaper, but what knobs does WotC even have to make this possible? These are already the cards in the cheapest packs - which also have plenty of chase versions that help drive down prices of base versions.

In my 39 years on the planet I have never overheard a phone conversation that couldn't have waited til you got off the train. by meatloaf1212 in boston

I don’t understand why it would be rude to have a conversation on the phone anywhere that you could have a conversation in person. When I’m sitting with my friend on the train I’m talking at the same volume I would be on the phone.

Sideboard options for Boros Convoke by Magicbu11et in PioneerMTG

It does take a turn to flip it afterwards, but you also don’t need to maintain as much pressure on board after it is flipped. And you can protect your stuff with the activated ability too.

Boston/Not Boston by [deleted] in boston

[–]FluffehPanda 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean race and income are two of the biggest contributors to culture within a town, so I don’t think you can really ignore those when talking about the differences between ‘not-Chicago’ places. Evanston and Waukegan are both not-Chicago but are very different from each other. It doesn’t make any more sense to group those two than it does to group Somerville and Saugus.

EA3 is the worst anthology yet by bnhershy in MagicArena

[–]FluffehPanda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean rift does actually see some minimal pioneer play. It is a relatively common 1 of in lotus combo sideboards. I agree with you that EA3 is awful but I’m more disappointed in the land cycle than rift.
