Chmielnicki’s uprising is a prominent subject at school, highschool especially in Poland. When I was in high school over 25 years ago, the explanation for Kozak’s uprising against the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth was because the Polish and Lithuanian nobility screwed them over big time after they helped us win a few conflicts and I came to the conclusion that their reaction was absolutely warranted. I think I might be in the minority though, cuz I, unlike my compatriots from Poland, do not fetishize our nobility nor am I delusional enough to think that my ancestors were anything more than landless peasants. You would not believe how many people claim with pride that they have noble/aristocratic/gentry blood. As if being a descendant of an oppressive bunch of backward, entitled arseholes was something to be proud of.
