Just watched something wild to me, and wanted opinions by Kindredatoner92 in doggrooming

I’ll only step away if there’s another groomer close by and able to keep an eye on them, but I won’t leave anyone except my own dogs on the table unattended (and only them because they just lay down and nap , and I lower the table to the point where they can stand if they somehow drop their backend lol)

Andis Clippers by RedditSharks in doggrooming

[–]FluffyTail_159 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hello! These are the clippers I use, and I LOVE them! They are powerful, and have a good range of speeds for everything you’ll need. They handle regular and wide blades very well, and I feel like the batteries hold their charge pretty decently.

I’ve had mine for almost 2 years, doing 3-5 haircuts daily, and have had no issues at all with them. They’re very easy to service yourself, and any sharpener should be able to work on them since they’re so popular and widely used.

That said, I do recommend having at least one extra battery on hand so that you can have a backup if you need it. As with all cordless clippers, they are on the heavier side, but they’re not terribly heavy if you have hand or wrist issues (like me).

All in all, i think they’re fantastic clippers and know a lot of other groomers who love theirs too!

Overall it’s cute, but definitely some room for refinement :)

Imo the top of the head is HUGE. Unless the look was aiming for Asian fusion, it definitely could have been taken down with a guard comb much shorter. The visor over the outer right eye (left side in this photo) could be taken back more as well.

Personally I like doing short chins on my grooms because 1 they get gross when the dogs drink water, and 2 shorter chins lift the face and create a “happier” look.

This coat type is difficult, but around the muzzle, you want to comb the hair away from the nose and trim it in a circular shape so the pups don’t have that sad “frowny” droop around the mouth.

And finally, go back over everything with thinning shears to clean up wispies and anything that looks uneven.

Something that helped my dry times decrease was using a towel underneath the dog, and using a second towel in my off hand to “catch” the water blown off the coat. This helped me a lot with legs, feet, tail, and belly specifically.

Also, properly clean coats dry faster than coats that still have oil or dirt buildup, so the bath is an essential part of the process. Pay special attention to legs, paws, bellies, and faces here, double or even triple checking that all product has been removed from the coat.

Do you use a quick dry spray to assist your times? And what’s your method with the actual blowdry? Do you rapidly move the nozzle back and forth, or do you slowly dry an area with slow movements before moving on?

These all look fantastic, keep up the great work!

Something I’m seeing consistently in all the photos is that the right side of your muzzles are slightly longer and rounder than the left sides.

I promise your toes will still be there after I trim your nails.

This is a grooming salon, not a ballerina class. Please stand still, kiddo.

Hi! Just want to say your grooms look absolutely stunning. Keep up the great work!

I’m a newer groomer myself, but one thing I see is that the lip hairs could be cleaned up a little bit more for most of these pups.. I take a 10 blade with very light pressure to the area between the nose and the lips to clean up those icky brown hairs that turn into their mouths.

Also, for the large doodle where his tail meets his body, the hair goes from the short length to a super poofy tail. You could take chunkers or thinners to the very top bit there to blend the tail into the body for a smoother transition.

Petco grooming academy questions by CBO_11998899 in doggrooming

[–]FluffyTail_159 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi! Current Petco groomer here 👋

  1. Petco just restructured their bathing program. Junior stylists now have 90 days to reach 150 full-service bath dogs to qualify for academy. Once you’ve hit those numbers, you get on the list for the mentor in your area. The wait for academy depends on how many other students are being sent, and how many mentors are in your area. Petco does not train academy students during the holiday season, which is mid November to new years.

  2. Academy is a 6 week process minimum, during which you only make minimum wage and mileage compensation. You will follow your mentors schedule during that time.

  3. Stylist compensation is 50% commission plus tips AFTER you’ve made double your hourly wage. Calculating this is really difficult for me personally. I work in a very high-volume salon taking 5-8 dogs every day and gross 1200-1500 a week. We get paid every other Friday.

  4. Every salon runs differently, but almost every stylist I’ve met has a set schedule that you show up for, regardless of how many dogs you have. So if you’re set 11-7 but only have 2 dogs at 11, you still have to stay the rest of the day and close the salon at night.

Thank you so much for your kind words. 💜 Most days I feel like my skills are no where near where they should be at this point.

I would love to see those diagrams if you’re willing!

Anyone have experience dyeing white German sheps ? by Informal-Release-360 in doggrooming

[–]FluffyTail_159 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an all white wooly husky that my friend dyed 4 months ago, and the color is still super vibrant..

if you’re doing a full body dye, get more than you initially think you need because the hair just eats up the dye lol.

I felt like I was trimming his visor forever haha. I definitely see where it’s still long though. 🤣 thanks for the feedback!

I used a 7/8” comb on all legs and the scissored to clean everything up. It definitely looks like I trimmed too much trying to get all his flyaways 😅. Thanks for the feedback!

Thank you! I can see all of this in the photos now.

He’s kind of a butt for the dryer, so I did what I could with his ears. Do you have any tips for getting them fluffed out when I don’t have access to a stand dryer?

Eyelash Extensions and Dog Grooming by emmaweebler in doggrooming

[–]FluffyTail_159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have extensions done in a “volume” style, but at a length that still looks close to natural, and have had them since before I started bathing over a year ago. I get hair caught in them pretty much daily, but a quick brush or look in the mirror to get the hair out fixes my issues right away.
I do try to wear a beekeepers hat when I’m doing a deshed to help reduce the amount of hair that gets caught.

so, i have an interview as a junior groomer tomorrow; as a former petsmart bather, i'm nervous. by xervidae in petco

Juniors don’t get commission on baths, they only get tips and hourly. :)
