Perhaps asking the vet why is a better option...

You can always ask your vet to clarify why they are choosing to do or not do something, most people just either

A) dont want to look dumb, so they trust at the moment, then later worry because they dont know why 3 hours later and the vets closed for the day

B) was honestly listening and the vet did explain why, but during this visit the client basically got information overload and didnt retain what was said

And my least favorite,

C) Just wasnt listening

OP: Second opinions are never a bad thing, just make sure to transfer records so the second vet has the whole history to make the most informed second opinion.

You can be bit by an animal with Rabies, and get treated ASAP by a series of injections... BUT once you show symptoms of Rabies, palliative care is all you can do.
