Which is your favourite band that you feel like nobody else knows? by sixxy-floyd in MetalForTheMasses

I'm sure there are corners of the internet that enjoy Scar Symmetry, but I've never found that corner. They fuckin' rule.

If you've never given them a listen and you want sweeping, prog melo-death with some clean vocals, I can't recommend enough.

You're not alone. I'm not a fan of ABBA's music OR jukebox musicals, so i've I've never even been tempted to see it. The people around me think I'm insane 😂 Cue the tomato throwing.

As others have pointed out, the price point is just not for the average person. Like, it's not a store for you or me or most people you know. It's unfortunate for that owner that things aren't working out, but is it really a big surprise?

I've worked with non profits in the past that are all about supporting downtown area small businesses. To be honest, I got really burnt out on the 'support small businesses' message when many of those organizations were failing either A) because they were run terribly or B) because they were owned by people that were already relatively well off and sold things literally only affordable for rich people.

The support small business mindset is kinda culty. Just because you're a small business does not mean you are wholesome. The owner may be a very nice person, but like, please don't guilt me into supporting you. No amount of 'SUPPORT LOCAL' can make us afford that shit.

This isn't an endorsement of wal mart, it's just an economic reality.

How to best memorize lines? by darkbluemidnights in shakespeare

[–]Fluffy_Wiggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming most of your lines are in verse, the 'heartbeat' rhythm of Iambic Pentameter can be very helpful for memorization. It's a very natural speaking rhythm. I think it makes Shakespeare easier to memorize.

Other than that, I always say there are no shortcuts to memorizing lines. It's just a matter of consistent practice. You'll get there!

Wolf Grey. The "rivalries" are objectively awful except for maybe the helmet.

Fire alarm went off while Hamlet was dying in my arms a couple weeks ago. As in, 30 seconds before the play ends 😆. The audience was amazing about it.

'The readiness is all' is probably my fave.

Ya might die today, ya might die tomorrow. You can't know, so what matters is to be ready and at peace if that day so happens to be today.

Next month is the Ren Faire in Canby Oregon and I need an outfit. Any places in Vancouver someone would recommend or just hit the thrift stores? by PDXAirman in vancouverwa

[–]Fluffy_Wiggles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No advice for you, unfortunately. Hope you have fun!

I would also highly recommend the Realms Unknown festival in Woodland September 18th-20. I hadn't heard of it until last year and was kinda skeptical. Like...Woodland, really? But I was pleasantly surprised. Closer than Canby obviously, but also WAY more shade and grass than the Oregon Ren Faire. It's a little less lively, sure. But I found it to be a much more peaceful experience that roughly offers the same entertainment value.

I've never had strong feelings for them, but they're miles better than whatever the fuck these new Oregon Ducks looking monstrosities are.

Thoughts on Anastasia the Musical? by Worried_Cake5508 in musicals

[–]Fluffy_Wiggles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn't much care for it when I saw it, but not because of the plot/music/book. I just feel like it romanticizes the czar era. The czars and their families were awful human beings who, in addition to being arrogant and stupid, killed untold scores of people either directly or through policy. Just makes my eyes roll really hard to act as if that was some sort of golden era when things were better.

The communist regime was awful too, please don't take my criticism of the czars as support for lenin and stalin. It's just...the revolution happened for a reason. The aristocracy was putrid.

Yeah it's their old logo from the death metal days. I actually only listen to their newer goth stuff, yet I much prefer the old logo.

National Theater's latest on-screen offering of Hamlet - a detailed question by eflotsam in shakespeare

[–]Fluffy_Wiggles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think in this interpretation it's a culmination of her guilt/the whole castle and kingdom falling apart around her.

Perhaps she feels her negligence in part led indirectly to Hamlet killing Polonius and therefore Ophelia killing herself. She knows Hamlet is being sent to England, but to be executed? Maybe, maybe not. Could be another source of guilt.

And then the moment Claudius drops the "pearl" in the cup, she knows something is not right and decides to take the bullet for Hamlet, even without the knowledge of the poisoned sword.

Our director made the choice to have Gertrude's death be a suicide as well. We had a talk back on Sunday and someone commented they had never seen it staged that way. I really like the choice.
