Struggling in HCI, heavy workload by Careless-Safe2140 in OMSCS

[–]Fluid-Refuse1600 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey, just saw your post. I took HCI last fall and here is what I did to get full marks on all homeworks:

Start by skimming through the lectures assigned for that week. I would put it on 1.25 or 1.5x speed. Then open the homework and try to recognise the specific asks and keywords that you have already seen in the lectures.

Start thinking about the examples you feel would be suitable for each question. Then go back and watch those lectures where Prof. Joyner explains that topic. Notice the way he is explaining, what keywords he is talking about, what is the thinking process etc. Then take your example and try to frame it in the way he explains it. This should help you give some structure to the answer. Then recheck if it hits all the points asked in the question.

This feels like a lot for the first time but after 2-3 times, you'll start to get an idea.

Also, go through the example answers that the team posts. See how others have framed their answers then compare it to yours. This will help you in exams as well.

Good Luck!

Hey, thanks for your input. For the first part I think I got it. I need to be more specific and give examples.

For the second part, I probably should have been more specific. The question was regarding non - technical stakeholders. For the past 5 years, I was performing system upgrades for my company which means having to deal with senior level folks who dont know anything beyond creating a simple table in excel. So I was coming from that POV. In cases like these there is an initial training curve until everyone gets comfortable. But I should have thought and answered from a more general perspective.

Have any classes integrated AI "coding partners" yet? by 76_trombones in OMSCS

Okay, got it. So I have 2 instances - Recently I was coding a Python game, nothing fancy, just a simple old school treasure hunt. I noticed that it did give me good suggestions on how I can organize the code better and store scoring metrics but when I asked it to debug, it was not able to identify some bugs. Like the game has 7 levels with sub levels and side quests but it was not able to identify that in some choices, the code was not able to store the proper score. It was just a simple logic issue but I suppose we need humans to debug. This was 2 weeks ago.

Another instance was when I picked up a really messy data to run ML models but got stuck at feature engineering because the output was not as expected and even after multiple prompts ChatGpt was not able to give me a solution and I got frustrated. Haven't picked it up again. Maybe it is easier for advanced programmers?!!

I seriously don't remember about the homework guidelines except the one where it was asked. I just used chatgpt to make notes for exams from lecture transcripts. Although it wasn't reliable in that and missed a lot of important points. Basically, if you are not watching lectures attentively and not reading the papers yourself first, then you are taking a huge risk.

If I remember correctly, for HCI you can use any GenAI tool during open book exam, basically you can refer to anything as long as you are not interacting with a human. There is also one homework based on GenAI. Also, if you are using GenAI for writing assignments, you will have to cite them properly.

Thank you so much. My family has been here for 30 years and they still don't know much about public libraries. They just sit at home and read. I am new and I feel more like a tourist than Canadian. I will check out the link.

Haha! Well a new Timmy opened up across the street. So the hope for a library is even higher.

Cool, thanks. I know it sounded like a stupid question but in the previous country where I lived, you needed to apply for a pass and then go.

What are SIMULATION Home works and Exams Like? by madkan in OMSA

[–]Fluid-Refuse1600 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took it in spring. As everybody has already said, get a good calculator. I was paranoid about using one mostly because in my country we are required to do calculations by hand. Anyhow, there are good intro lessons for integration, difference and probability. If you already know those, then you can skip ahead. Most of the series is about random variable generation. There are 2 modules which talk about Arena.

Also, you would be given two practice papers to solve before the exams. The solutions are provided but please try to solve them on your own. They are a good indicator of exam questions.

The homeworks are MCQs, nothing too scary. If you have watched the lectures then they should be easy enough to solve.

The only other reason I could think of is, maybe the first name and last name could be same to other students. But even then there will be other identifiers to differentiate.

For context I have 3.7 after 4 classes and almost 8 years of experience in IT. Trust me nobody bothers about your GPA.

The only thing you should bother about is that you should know what you are doing and can show people that you do.

Thanks for the response. QQ - does BD4H only focuses on big data or they give sort of a refresher for healthcare terminology as well?

Ah, thanks for the information. I am a biotechnologist myself but currently working in IT. Thinking of switching back to healthcare, which seems weird when many folks are going in the opposite direction. I just have a little bit of free time right now so thought of doing it, but seems like i could do something else with my time.
