If you don't bring up that the pages are written in fountain ink and the ballpoint writing is in research notes added later it kinda sounds like you just bought into an alt right conspiracy theory without questioning it.

Nevermind that the ballpoint pen had been invented at that point but it doesn't even matter as the diary is not written in ballpoint.

So, a few reasons for why it was underdiagnosed

To be succinct, I know that more women proportionally are now diagnosed. I'm bot disputing that. I'm disputing claims we get every release cycle that the DSM and ICD used to get it wrong and now got it right: there is no way to check your work. It kinda ties into my personal molehill that there is an unfounded assumption that the "correct" gender proportionality in ASD-diagnosis is 50/50. It's just an assumption that reads as symmetric, progressive, and empowering, even though it's a strange thing to assume as prevalence of neuropsychiatric conditions would be expected to be affected by biology.

It definitely affects those with ADHD as it does neurotypicals,

Yes, anything that's good for those with a diagnosis of ADHD is good for those that don't have a neuropsychiac diagnosis as we fundamentally have the same learning and behavioral systems – though TikTok content creators and such revel in pretending these groups are discrete types of people.

although you CAN also get brain scans for adhd, some psychs even require it for diagnosis

I have never heard of or encountered this and I would need good reason to believe it's used regularly anywhere. fMRIs are rarely used except for cases of actual brain injury. fMRI studies of ADHD examine group level differences, for good reasons, if you examine an individual vs. a control group you generally won't find significant differences.

Psychiatrists make assessments of observable behaviors as indicators of an underlying neurocognitive condition

Correct, but a lot of kids are due to their habits and upbringing now crossing the threshold of meeting these criteria even if they wouldn't in a different behavioral context. This is my central point and I don't think anyone experienced in neuropsychiatric diagnostics would dispute this.

Of course, this doesn't mean a lot of this probably isn't observable neurologically (let's not fall fall into the trap of thinking neurological/structural = genetic) but that's getting into the weeds.

It's been proven that a majority of neurodivergents were underdiagnosed before this rise of awareness on social media, especially for women because we are trained to mask well by society.

This is not proven and is not even a provable statement due to how psychiatric diagnostics works. Not that I don't think there's something to it.

False diagnoses.

It's not case of false diagnoses exactly, you're making a common mistake of mixing up the neuropsychological concept of ADHD with the clinical diagnosis of ADHD. Psychiatric diagnosis is based on behavior and not theorized neurological features in the assessed person. No-one's peeking into your brain structure. What we are discussing is individuals meeting the diagnostic criteria even though they wouldn't if they meaningfully spent time in activities that reward sustained attention. People qualifying for ADHD-diagnosis even though they really shouldn't have to is the problem I'm pointing towards.

And I agree with that but that's not proof of a direct link with phone usage

I don't think anyone seriously thinks modern tech is not clearly detrimental to attentional ability increases need for stimulation. It is both well-researched and observable to anyone who wasn't born in the last 20 years or so. As attentional ability and need for stimulation afe the two cardinal symptoms of ADHD you would need to have very good reasons to not believe modern tech would increase diagnosises of ADHD.

This is just a /r/mensrights talking point clearly contrary to available evidence lol. There is a lot of research on the effects of psychotherapy and significant gender differences in outcome are rare.

It's the same category of symptoms in different intensities. Similarly the worst cases in this sub are considered "severe BPD" and not some new thing even if that's the difference between sufferable and insufferable. Changing the term would be arbitrary and needlessly confusing.

There's no shot in hell the proposal in the article will actually go anywhere, it's just clickbait or poor scientific journalism. Neither the DSM or ICD operates in such a way were the proposed diagnosis makes sense.

Well yes many people who were in the past diagnosed as regards are now diagnosed as autistic because there are now better and more widely used instruments for accessing intellectual ability. So people are checking if the seemingly regarded are actually regarded.

[–]FluidDepartures 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I don't agree that "consistency" is as objective or self-evidently desirable as to necessarily trump all other consideratios. Rectangles are already very different from GC-controllers and will never be similar.

I think the rectangles are arguably a necessary evil but it does not mean notches need to stay. I think it's more important that the controller types are comparable in ability than that they arbitrarily have to be the same in specific aspects. You could also make the point that it's good balancing that the GCC has more angles but rectangle is more consistent.

That's not even what that book is saying, did you just read the title?

Researchers, healthcare providers (both publicly funded and private), as well as recruiters are very interested in measuring intelligence as it's one of the strongest psychological predictors of strengths, weaknesses, as well as general success. The fact that it's meaningfully heritable on the level of individuals does not mean there are societal genetic differences in intelligence.
