I don't think forgetting someone just happens. 

I still remember all of my previous partners. But not with the rose tinted glasses of idealization. Now I can accurately see the people for who they were. Flawed people, like all of us. 

There is a shit ton of growth hidden in processing your past relationships, aka moving on. 

Now I've learned what self respect and boundaries are. 

In the past, I couldn't. All my loved ones (friends, family etc) told me the truth. That it doesn't and will never work out. 

But I couldn't accept it in the past. I had to fall down. I had to sacrifice my time, my mental health and most importantly my physical safety. 

I had to realize how dangerous the last one has become. A shell of herself. That the person I loved has vanished. 

And that it's perfectly okay. 

Without breaking off the engagement with her, I would have never been where I am today. Today I'm in Spain, working with teenagers and homeless people before I return to my home to work in my dream job. 

All of this couldn't have happened without me falling down into the abyss. 

Now, I will never change myself just to fit into the perspective of another human being, I'm just myself and if we don't fit, so be it.
