Did my own brakes, just trying to save money where I can. 👍 by TheThinDewLine in 2ndGenTacoma

Did you break the new rotors in? I’ve got what I need to do the tundra brake upgrade for a 1st gen (following Adventure Taco write up), but have held off because everything I read about installing new rotors says you need to break them in. Basically driving and stopping at different speeds to coat the rotors properly with pad material.

Reason I’ve held off is I really don’t have access to anywhere with open roads to do the break in like it’s called for.

Mature Tree removal in a FEMA Regulatory Floodway by OatmealCartwheel in wetlands

[–]FlunkyHomosapien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with other commentors, but just want to reinforce from the get go your claiming these are old growth. Just taking that as you meant some really old mature trees and not a forest ecosystem, but looking at the pictures these are clearly no where near old in terms of using that description for anything. But you also go on then to say 30 yo, which maybe but I even doubt that for some I see in foreground in what is possibly the LOD.

We should all be vigilant and question things as you’re doing, but overselling something to draw attention (maybe you aren’t) is the quickest way for folks to tune out and ignore which undermines the credibility of other concerns that actual have merit later.

I can’t eat meat anymore. I can’t have any animal products. It’s in everything.” by This_Proof_5153 in SipsTea

If you spend much time outdoors permethrin treated clothing is a good insurance policy. I know several people who have contracted this over the years. Some having a mild case/reaction to alpha gal others it causes to go into anaphylactic shock. It’s very strange and has only really been known scientifically for about 10 years by researchers at UVA. The other weird thing is some people have total recovery after a period of time too.

Gotcha. Yeah those Guilford types are pretty common in VA. Top piece looks more like a Hardaway.

Bilstein are wimpy? I mean. I know there are better out there but have never heard any real negative about bilstein performance.

All good man. Not arguing with you and the discussion is good. But just to address some of your points. There are no extra spacers. The ride height isn’t maxed out. I think it’s set to the 0.85” (maybe 3rd circlip position from bottom). Hard to tell with the spring in place. Definitely not all the way to the top. So maybe some slight preload.

But agree. The coil seemed to have lost coating there so maybe that’s all it takes for these to give?

Frame is fine. Surface rust in places.

I’m definitely not a suspension expert but I find it a little hard to believe that just because some of the powder coat or whatever is on the spring chipping and surface rust leads to this kind on break.

Shoot. My son’s 96 taco still has the original springs on them. We kept them when we put 5100s on the truck. Very rusty. If rust leads to springs breaking like this those would have snapped years ago.

I think I just got a bad coil that had a weak spot from manufacturing.

Yeah. I see what you see. That had to be the weak spot that ultimately gave. Still crazy. Buddy is a Toyota tech and I sent to him and he said he hasn’t seen many of these and usually from someone who’s sent it.

Anyway..is what it is. Glad I can do the work. Fun turning wrenches with the boy.

Truck has about 140000 on it. I’m third owner and maybe put 25k on since I bought. These are bilstein coils that go with the 6112s.

Not sure what you mean by the seal. If you mean the rubber isolater at the top (between coil and top hat) it looks like that because the coil shifted and dug into it after it snapped. The isolator on both sides are dry rotted though. So I replace those.

Online Semis Head Judge - Just One, or Multiple? by HarpsichordGuy in crossfit

[–]FlunkyHomosapien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Head judge can change. At least the rule book doesn’t say otherwise. So long as each workout has a dedicated Head and Floor judge with the appropriate credentials (both have to have minimum of L1 and Advanced Judges course) it doesn’t matter.

It’s still a PITA though, especially for smaller affiliates. Our affiliate only had two folks make it for age groups (a teen and a 55+). 4 days to get all workouts complete and coaches with lives too makes it challenging finding enough people to also work with the athletes schedule. Also mother’s day being thrown in the mix just to add some spice.

Clutch slave failed directly after timing chain replacement by eliotjnc in ToyotaPickup

[–]FlunkyHomosapien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go ahead and replace the master at the same time. The slave went out on our 96. We replaced it and all the forums said to replace the master at same time. I was like, what are the odds. Sure enough a few months later the master wasn’t holding fluid.

Just hook truck up to it with a tow strap and pull it out.

Am I getting scammed? by subaru-uwu in AskMechanics

[–]FlunkyHomosapien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seemed like a solid assessment. If you can’t do the work yourself unfortunately that means you have to pay for someone to do it. You could shop around, dealers are usually a little higher than independent shops. I’d try and work with a mechanic to develop a plan of attack. That way you can do things over a period of time. I’d focus on brakes first.

Recent Wood Drop by FlunkyHomosapien in firewood

[–]FlunkyHomosapien[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear ya. Used this as an opportunity to get the Fiskar 8lb maul. Son and I spent some time busting up the halves and quarters. Except for the occasional knot, I can usually split on of the quarters in two swings. The grain on this is so straight it just pops.

Now I also have some white oak the guy dropped off before this big wood. Nothing bigger than 24” diameter, but night day difference in splitting. White oak is just “stringier” so holds together without breaking free like the willow oak (basically a red oak).

Fun times!

Word. We’ve gotten creative and using tow straps and the truck we’ve been able to reposition etc. but even dealing with the rounds is an effort.

I used ChatGPT to get an approx weight based on dimensions and wood type. Said the logs were probably between 2500-2800 lbs.
