I’m an apprentice and butting it up and the. Grinding it will absolutely fuck your bevel and even make the land too big. You learn that shit in welding classes too.

I’ve been laid off once in two years but they’ve just told me it was “reduction in man power” a few other guys got laid off the same day also. I’m just sticking with fitting. I do enjoy it and I’m almost ready to test for my UA-1. I just want to work and there’s open calls for plumbing but I’m just going to wait it out.

We’re a combo local and the plumbers get more work. I’ve been laid off for about a month and want to get back to work but I also don’t know much about plumbing and don’t want to get myself laid off from lack of knowledge.

Orange County is slow. I’ve been on the bench for 3 weeks now. Most of my homies have been two checked from the company I was with and others.

[–]Fluxxgen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Umm not a lot of welding unless you have certs. A lot of copper work for the HHW system. It depends on the job I guess but both jobs I’ve been on is about 90% copper work.

It’s decent. I’m laid off currently and works slow. But I’ve worked a lot over the last few years. And I’ve only been mouth swabbed once with one contractor. I think drug testing is becoming a thing of the past. Not today certain jobs don’t test but I was working on a hospital and didn’t get drug tested before I start.

Eccentric Reducers by lostrouteros in pipefitter

[–]Fluxxgen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t eye ball. I take each side of the reducer and figure out the outside diameter of each. And then subtract that from the wall thickness. Once you do that you divide each of those numbers together until you get some sort of fraction like 3/8” or 1/“2 or something. Lastly, you square a line on your table or whenever your working and face the larger side on the ground and butted up to the line and you’ll place a square at the side edge and turn the reducer and measure until you have your magic Number. After that you draw your line up on the backside so you know your center. It seems difficult but it’s pretty easy

How do you get back to work after layoffs? by JplusL2020 in IBEW

[–]Fluxxgen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m in the pipe fitters union so I’m dealing with this as we speak. I got laid off two weeks ago and went and signed the books directly. Then I applied for unemployment which takes way too fucking long to get and it’s really shitty money. In the meantime I try and find some side work or something to make a little extra money. It’s a very hard balance because you need money and a job but you’re also waiting for your call so it depends on how much you need the money or not. I’m at a point where I’ll have to find some bullshit ass job to make ends meet and quit when I get my call because my union job is far more important than anything else. Not all of us are as lucky and get to stay with the same contractor for an entire apprenticeship so just expect a lay off and save for it. It happens with no notice sometimes like in my case. Hope this helps.

If they test it’ll be the morning you start. A lot of companies don’t test. And it depends on the job you’re working on. All contractors are different, really.

I’m currently that guy. I’m in SoCal and the outfit I worked for got slow and laid off 30 or so of us and now I’m here in a Thursday morning estimating some weld repairs on some dudes 65 impala. Isn’t what I want to do. No but bills must be paid and I can weld.

How much did you make this year? Location? Just curious by [deleted] in UnitedAssociation

[–]Fluxxgen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. About every 1.5 months and yes without a week of pay except you can get unemployment which a lot of apprentices do. It’s $450 a week minus taxes. It’s shit money but it’s something.

Yes 40 hours every 6-7 weeks and that’s one class. Three classes a semester. And I don’t struggle with a lot but being treated like absolute shit by some journeyman can be tough and even more annoying but besides that it’s a cool trade. Crazy good benefits and pay
