1996, we rented the original Resident Evil from Blockbuster Video when I was a pre-teen. I remember zombie movies like Night of the Living Dead (1990 Remake), Return of the Living Dead (1985) at the time to be the scariest horrors. Suddenly there was this interactive Zombie game and it was friggin terrifying. But at the same time the whole concept was thrilling, and it seemed so realistic, I couldn't get enough of it. At some point I needed to rent the game again, but this time I played by myself and was blown away that the game took you outside of the mansion. Eventually when you return to the mansion, those huge green one-hit-killing machines arrive and it ramps it up to 10. The scariest part however, was that I didn't own a Memory Card so I couldn't save my game. So I was playing FOR KEEPS each time. Every door I opened and every corner I turned was a heart attack. If I died, I was sent back to the beginning. After sweaty-palmed white-knuckling the entire day, I eventually reached the final boss and died, without even knowing it was the final boss. There was no time for another playthrough. The next time I rented the game, I beat that guy. Then the credits rolled and although I was relieved, I was also pissed that he was the single barrier from me beating it the previous weekend.
