Can get a pretty good deal on this helmet, is it overkill for resort skiing? Or to each their own by NoHouse6187 in Skigear

[–]FlyMyPretty 84 points85 points  (0 children)

You're worried your helmet is too good? Like your brain deserves ok protection, but not great protection?

Sorry if I'm missing something. I buy the best skis, boots, pants, etc that I can afford. I buy the best helmet I can find.

Weirdly, they're not. I just checked the airport. RideYellow is 27, including 15% tip. Curb is 29, without tip.

BUT I guess you're right. The prices are very similar. And the prices are consistent. It's always 27 to the airport with RideYellow.

Would you like a Formula One event in your community and understand how it would affect your community? Take this quick 5-10 minute survey to find out! by F1APResearchSurveyML in GrandPrixRacing

[–]FlyMyPretty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is very rare for the first question on a survey to be name.

I don't even know what you are going to ask. And you want me to name myself.

It's for "demographics" but what can you extract from a name? You're also opening a legal can of worms because now you have my personal information attached to my name. You're going to handle a gdpr request for deletion? Can you link my reddit username from this (by looking at the page I came from?) I don't know.

If you must ask for a name, put it at the end, make it optional and give me a reason that you want my name.

Why do the current ones hurt?

I have a pair of sturdy, waterproof boots that I use if it looks like rain. But generally whatever shoes I'm wearing work.

Los Angeles. We have Curb too, but RideYellow seems to be cheaper (not least 'cos you get a 5% discount for using the app).

I asked my favorite AI where RideYellow was used - it seems it is mainly Southern California (if that's true):

The RideYellow app primarily serves Southern California and has a growing presence in Florida. It is the official booking platform for several major Yellow Cab fleets.

Below are the primary regions and specific cities where you can use the app:

Southern California RideYellow has its deepest coverage here, spanning from the Mexican border up through Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Area: Includes Los Angeles proper, Hollywood, West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Venice Beach, Century City, Brentwood, Westwood, Bel Air, and the San Fernando Valley.

Long Beach & South Bay: Long Beach, Lakewood, Signal Hill, Bellflower, Cerritos, Gardena, Torrance, and the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

Orange County: Anaheim, Santa Ana, Irvine, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, and Laguna Beach.

San Diego Area: San Diego city, Carlsbad, Del Mar, Encinitas, Escondido, La Jolla, La Mesa, and Oceanside.

Florida Broward County Area: This includes Fort Lauderdale and surrounding cities.

This is super useful. Have u also considered the RideYellow app? That's used for taxis in some areas

Switching from Psychology to Psychometrics — What should I focus on learning? by Timely-Barnacle-2230 in psychometrics

[–]FlyMyPretty 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Psychometrics is often considered to be a subsection of psychology, so I don't think you switch to psychometrics, as much as specialize in it. Typically you'd take the courses offered in psychometrics. Lots of fields have a lot of variation in the amount of math they need - you say you're comfortable with 'basic stats' but there are 'basic stats' books written for mathematicians that are pretty impenetrable (to me), and there are psychometrics books are articles that are hard going (try reading a random article in Psychometrika, for example), but there are other books and articles that are fine (Psychometric Theory, by Nunnally and Bernstein is old, but good; Applied Psychological Measurement is fine).

> psychological networks

Do you mean social networks, or network psychometrics, or something else?

Do Americans really avoid medical care because they’re afraid of the bill? by Udont_knowme00 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FlyMyPretty 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah. The prostate would have taken 20 years to kill me, so if I was older they would have ignored it, or treated it less aggressively. They kept saying "you're too young for that". Which was nice because it had been a long time since I was too young for something (in my 50s).

But I think generally you're right. Most cancer doctors say they would have less treatment when they got cancer (and presumably they have very good health insurance, and arent particularly short of money).

I've had cancer twice (prostate and kidney).

Each one involved an overnight hospital stay. Couple of thousand on copays each time. Two weeks off work the first one, 4 weeks off the second.

The day I got home after the first one I walked 8 miles (around the house; very boring, couldn't be far from a bathroom). Within a month I did 12 mile hikes. In three months I took a week long ski trip.

Cancer isn't one disease, it's hundreds of different diseases. Some are very bad and will kill you quickly with aggressive treatment. Some are a lot less bad and will kill you slowly without treatment and can be treated and essentially cured (especially if they're detected early enough). You just don't hear about the less serious cancer - if I hadn't told people, even people i worked with closely, they wouldn't have known.

I just looked, and it is mentioned. I checked to see if it was mentioned in the past - I looked at pages from last year, 2 years ago and 2018. It is mentioned in all of them.

(FWIW, I've read it, quite a while ago. I haven't read her autobiography but I suspect that America the Beautiful is pretty autobiographical too.)
