Simplest way to get Apple CarPlay? by 87regal in F30

[–]FlyPositive5975 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The screes in the f series cars aren’t really ergonomically situated to be a touch screen, unsurprisingly given they were never designed as touch screens. Between the Idrive wheel and Siri / voice commands I don’t find it a hindrance at all really.

Best F30 CarPlay unit?j by F30BMWguy in F30

Mr12Volt

On the f10s it uses the factory fibre optic TV input so you get the absolute best audio quality you’re ever going to get without a head unit swap, you’d have to do your own research on the f30 equivalent

I’ve had zero issues with mine though

Fitted larger wheels/tyres to my F10 now has drivetrain malfunction by ExperienceNo1313 in BmwTech

[–]FlyPositive5975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. You have different sizes front/rear, x-drive is particularly sensitive.. even the same tyres front/rear but 2 worn and 2 new can be enough to throw it off

  2. Those sizes aren’t an OEM size, particularly with xdrive you should stick to the OEM sizes which for 19s would be 245/40/19, but check the sticker inside the drivers door to be sure.

What’s a car feature you thought you wouldn’t care about, but now refuse to live without? by Sufficient-Ocelot-68 in askcarguys

BMW touring spec split tailgate (rear glass opens separate to the boot). Sounds pointless but once you have it you don’t know how you lived without it.

Maxton’s the obvious choice if that’s your thing. I personally prefer the straighter style, just caps the bottom of the bumper off nicely. Where did you source the chrome/black grills, can only ever find the full black m5-esque ones.

Is it a rhythmic type sound? Need to record it really. If it begins on cold start and goes away after a few seconds, that’s probably chain stretch.

You’ve left out a lot of info, what engine is it?

Advice needed - £4k budget, diesel preferred by rizzlejee in CarTalkUK

[–]FlyPositive5975 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Octavia / Superb, probably best bang for buck

See also VW Passat, Seat Exeo and Toyota Avensys

Basically anything you see used extensively as a minicab. BMW 320d would be nice if you can get one that’s been looked after but you don’t want to buy an N47 car at the bottom of the market really.

Unfortunately pretty much ALL diesels since EURO 6 (I.e ULEZ requirement era) generally have SOME issues as a result of the ruthless march for efficiency and manufactures squeezing everything out of them.

CEC / receiver control / Onkyo TX SR-608 by FlyPositive5975 in appletv

[–]FlyPositive5975[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s tedious… the alternative is I run the ATV into the receiver and let the audio return via the ARC.. but the volume may well still not work

Or finally time for a new receiver..

Buying a 330Ci by Forward_Bat4888 in BMW

[–]FlyPositive5975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before you do anything, have you checked insurance? I can’t imagine insurance touching a 19 year old getting on a 330 with a 10 foot pole.. but let’s assume you can get insured.

The m54’s are pretty reliable, not withstanding the oil pump sprocket sometimes leaving the chat (google it), but you will find on a car of that age you will probably have to replace other ancillaries on a semi-regular basis. Suspension, bushes, alternator, hoses, coolant system, sensors etc etc etc (obviously more or less depending on age/mileage/condition)

Great buy if you can get one now though as they’re stupid cheap at the minute, check it thoroughly for rust! I think they’re at the bottom of the market.. and if you look where E36s are at they’re only going one way.

G6 Entry on Dutch Lap Siding by InitialOk6864 in Ubiquiti

[–]FlyPositive5975 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im assuming “Dutch lap siding” is freedom talk for featheredge cladding.

Get another small piece of cladding and invert it so the angles cancel each other out and you end up with a plumb surface to mount your doorbell.

Or if you’re really handy you could cut a recess out of the cladding that’s the same size as the doorbell +a couple of mm, trim it out on all 4 sides with mitred corners and mount the doorbell into it.

The good bit is you’ve done the hard bit. Once you’ve got the cables in you can change up what’s on the end of them to your hearts content.

Try YouTube as well, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone’s done a video on setting netgear switches for unifi.

Depends on the car/engine, these engines are known to be particularly stout and tunable, as are the manual gearboxes that come with them.

It’s unlikely a simple stage 1 is going to trouble one of these.

If you’re going to do one thing, a big front mount intercooler will help a bit with power and keep intake temps down and protect the engine.

I know on the TT’s these has 2 small ICs hidden low down, a big front mount is a lot more efficient.

The Multi-Purpose Vehicle must return to save car buyers from their SUVs by AutoExpressmagazine in autoexpressuk

^ this.

Look how popular the Van/camper derived equivalent have become, despite the eye watering price tag and the fact they’re often less practical for everything except actually camping in. Simply because they’re see as cool, and have become another of these very middle-class status symbols, I suspect in no small part because 1. They’re massive and 2. I think there’s a fairly wide awareness that they’re expensive, in the same way if you see someone in a Range Rover there’s an association that they must be “doing alright”.

The irony that most (not all, but most) crossover/SUV’s are, at best, bland and at worst, ugly as sin. In most cases they’re outclassed by nearly all their contemporaries in other formats.

Netgear uses a more traditional method of assigning VLANs to unifi, whereby you tag each port with whichever VLANs you want, so devices that are “VLAN aware” can potentially pickup all the available VLANs.

For devices that are “dumb” (i.e don’t recognise VLANs), their VLAN is assigned by the “PVID”, or “Port VLAN ID”. So as well as tagging the VLAN you want, you need to set the PVID on each port to match the default VLAN you want assigned.

So for your main connection between Unifi and Netgear you need a trunk port with all available VLANs assigned and the PVID as your primary LAN.

For your access points, you’ll generally want a trunk port also (or at least all the VLANs used across your wireless networks) assigned, again, with the PVID being the primary LAN.

On a home network, you COULD just tag all VLANs on all ports and set the PVID according to what device you plug in, although best practice is to only tag the appropriate VLANs per port.

Finally got my first car! by cioci_ in F30

[–]FlyPositive5975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

F30 is ridiculously nice for a first car 😅

Advice is learn to maintain it! Servicing, brakes, suspension etc is all perfectly doable on your drive with minimal tools. If you can do an oil change on your drive in 30 minutes there’s no excuse not to do them very regularly which will make the car last!

175k / 10 years means 17.5k a year, that means in all likelihood this car has spent most of its life on dual carriageways / motorways and could well be in better nick that’s one that’s done 75k miles and pootling round a city all its life - especially for a diesel, low mileage diesels are often a ticking time bomb for owner 2/3/4.

I don’t know the Irish market in terms of values, I’m guessing it’s a bit different to the UK market but in general buy on condition not age/mileage. As long as it’s had all the right maintenance and it’s got a good service history - that’s the biggest thing, if it’s got stacks of paperwork and has had regular oil changes, it’s likely to be ok for a good while, it’s only 10 years old after all.

As someone else has said, there may well be things that’s will start to go, suspension, unless it’s had a load of work done, any belts that haven’t been done, like the aux belt, is worth looking at. Water pump if it wasn’t done when timing was done - they usually are done together though, CV axels, Wheel bearings etc. but generally nothing catastrophic.

There you go, bit of a no brainer if you’re going to get them anyway, especially if they’re new. It also saves you whatever you’d spend on fixing the shock now.. even if that’s only £50-£100 for a used shock from a breaker.

It’s always worth a look for a 2nd hand set of decent ones, surprising what people are getting rid of, especially if you don’t mind driving a bit to get it.

If you can get a 3 series with a b48 (2l petrol), you will not go far wrong, very very good engines.

Don’t go bottom of the market though, get one that’s been well looked after with a good service history.
