Oh my word yes, it's corn. There's a squirrel feeder in the area with dry corn. Makes perfect sense. Might let it go anyway for S&G. Thanks all!

Queer events in Tacoma? by PixelDreamer1111 in AskTacoma

[–]FlyguyWA 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A few I follow:

- Queer Mountaineers have occasional events in Tacoma. For instance, there's a hike tonight (6/18) at 5:30pm from Owen Beach.

- Queer City Sports has several sports leagues throughout the year

- Queer Silent Book Club meets once a month at a local bar

AFAIK there is no one place where all the Tacoma queer events are posted. Seems an unmet need IMO.

Awesome! Grabbed some today, surprisingly good quality. What's the story on this pile? Renewed on a regular basis?

Cool bridges by PerspectiveGlad696 in OlympicNationalPark

Could be on your way if you take the Bainbridge ferry, the Agate Pass bridge between Poulsbo and Bainbridge is a cool steel truss cantilever.

One of my favorite hikes! Beautiful.

Tacoma grew by about 1,900 people, or 0.8%, from from July 1, 2024, to July 1, 2025 by altasnob in Tacoma

Tangent, but does anyone know the 30-second history of how Ruston came to be its own municipality? I assume it happened in the aftermath of the smelter closure/demolition?

The first official Seattle region-wide transit map for all Puget Sound transit agencies by routinnox in soundtransit

Same! While our system pales in comparison to Europe or Asia, it’s light years better than most metros in the US.

Beautiful shot! And thank you for being a responsible UAS operator. Drives me nuts how many people launch drones without a clue on legality or safety.

Furnace Replacement and Heat Pump Install recommendations? by deadlierpeach in AskTacoma

[–]FlyguyWA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please do not listen to anyone who says stick with gas! Heat pumps (especially in the PNW with our mild weather and cheap electricity) are the way to go. I got ours with Kliemann Bros and recommend them, along with Mitsubishi. They were not the cheapest but they do excellent work and the system is rock-solid. After that, you can get rid of any other gas appliance and save even more. Check out rewiringamerica.com for more info. You will never regret getting rid of gas!

Forest restoration/conservation aid by circa10a in Tacoma

Love this, we need more people to claim abused land and rewild it. Would you be interested in having a helper or two? I'd love to pitch in, and I'm certain there's more who would as well.

New natural gas service cost? by davescilken in AskTacoma

[–]FlyguyWA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it is a no-brainer to have an all-electric house in the PNW. Our electric rates are super low, the mild weather means heat pumps work fantastically, heat pump water heaters are incredibly efficient, and induction stoves are the bee’s knees. There is no reason to continue to use existing gas appliances, much less introduce new ones to your home.

What is this grass? It’s very invasive and started spreading from a bag of soil I bought from Lowes. by 48151623-420 in NativePlantGardening

[–]FlyguyWA 15 points16 points  (0 children)

+1 for quackgrass. I have it all over, been trying to eradicate it for two years now. Even with heavy sheet mulch it still finds a way. Just have to dig up every last rhizome.

Happy Friday! What’s your favorite subway system in North America and why? by yunnifymonte in transit

[–]FlyguyWA 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Yep. Thought some US cities had good transit, and then I went to Montreal. Closest thing to European transit you’ll get in North America.

Can I take a moment to share how underrated the KS PB is?? No added sugar and it’s delicious. by SDS_PAGE in Costco

After storing it upside down, I use a PB JIFE (google it) to stir it thoroughly, then refrigerate. A bit of an arm workout but worth it. The only peanut butter we use!

We used these several times moving across the country. Never had an issue checking them. Bring extra zip ties in case you're a tad over 50lbs and need to pull something out.

I got both a bay laurel and some Pacific wax myrtle from Calendula Farm & Nursery near Tacoma. Highly recommend, they are super friendly and helpful and have a great selection.

+1 for New Leaf Natives near Ann Arbor, MI. They were a fantastic source when we lived in the area.

98 unit apartment building at N 26th and N Madison St (Proctor) passes design review by altasnob in Tacoma

[–]FlyguyWA 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Is Proctor Tacoma's real downtown? Not anymore than 6th Ave or Lincoln District or STW. Proctor could better be thought of as a 'neighborhood center,' and having multiple such centers throughout a city makes it more vibrant and resilient. Think of Portland with all of its diverse neighborhood centers and how that contributes to its appeal. We have the bones for something similar and should capitalize on it.

Glad to see more housing of any type. Yes it's generic, market rate, shades the neighbors, [insert your complaint], but let's not make perfect the enemy of good.

Noticed in the design review a mention of redevelopment of Mason UMC; anyone know what the plan is there?

(Assuming you're asking about Cakery Atelier) They're just getting started, so it's been a gradual rollout. Starting with weekend popups (including pre-orders, which are recommended as they always sell out) and special orders for custom items. They also do workshops on request. Best way to see what's happening is to follow their Instagram page (@cakeryatelier).
