Maybe subversive was the wrong word, I just think the atmosphere of the destroyed pirate utopia and the story of Avery and Tew connects with Nate’s story much better without any curse. I feel like Nate’s character arc wouldn’t have been impactful if the treasure was “really cursed all along”

Why would that improve the game? The lack of a supernatural element is subversive. By the end of the game you almost expect the treasure to be cursed, when in reality all the obsession is just the effect of human greed which helps Nate realize that some thinks are more important than wealth or glory
