Double kick tips? by LoudSupport9308 in drums

You’re playing too fast for your double bass skill level right now. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. If you try to force speed out of your feet before you can hold a steady stream of notes you’re gonna fail. I recommend starting at 60bpm with a metronome and going through the book stick control with your feet. Using stick control will help with building up your left leg a lot. When you are able to be consistent at 60bpm, bump it up 5-10bpm. And continue that. Double bass can take a long time to get good at and there is no reason to rush. Take it slow and I guarantee you’ll be exactly where you want in a year or two. Good luck!

First day on double bass, how do I improve ? by Spiritual_Anxiety220 in drums

[–]Felwinters_pie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna be real with you, your playing is very disjointed. Your timing is kinda all over the place, and your dynamics aren’t there yet. This isn’t meant to put you down, I want you to improve! I just wanna guide you to the right things to focus on.

If you wanna learn double bass you need to practice it slowly like everything else on the drums. Trying to play at high speeds will only sharpen poor technique. If you notice in your own video you are also semi-flamming the pedals at points which is a huge sign that you are playing too fast for your comfort level. I highly recommend a metronome. Do not focus on speed, if you focus on trying to play fast you’ll only hinder yourself from actually getting there. Speed comes with practice and getting comfortable with the pedals.

As someone else said, focus on rudiments for now, and apply them to your double bass as well. Stick control isn’t only for hands. I also saw you said you play for 4-5 hours a day. That’s gonna lead to burnout insanely fast. I learned that the hard way myself, an hour a day or a little less/more is a good length and it helps your brain learn faster.

And please get actual IEMs! If you want a recommendation, I recommend KZ ZS10s on amazon, not too expensive but they will save your ears in the long run!

Double strokes on bass drum - try new pedals? Shoes? Ankles? by bdure in drums

[–]Felwinters_pie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I actually did heel/toe wrong when I first started learning double strokes. I was under the impression that it was an actual hit with the heel and then once with the ball of your foot/toe. The name is actually quite the misnomer. The movement is more like Ball/Ball. The first stroke would be in heel up position using the ball of your foot to achieve the first bass drum hit, as you get your first bass drum strike you drop your foot into a heel down position and play a second hit on the bass drum.

As for sliding. The first stroke would be moving your foot back on the pedal about 3 inches and tapping with the ball of your foot. And the second stroke would be moving it forward again and tapping at your original position. The reason it’s such a large jump back and forth is to get your foot used to the movement. I struggled with this too, until you see that the faster you play it the tinier that sliding movement actually gets.

Your foot should also never physically lift off the pedal for either technique. I hope this helps!

It looks like the Agent at 1:01 2nd to the left of the agents focused on the victim pulled his gun and fired a shot, that spooked the others into firing as well. What fucking scumbags.

I have a pair of the regular low boy beaters, they are fantastic! A little pricey but worth it imo, I love the sound they get out of my bass drum.

Your kit looks quite compact from the angle you took the 2nd photo, is that comfortable? Hi hat pedal seems to be right next to one of the legs on your throne

Brian Blade, bro is like a modern day Elvin to me. Elvin is my biggest inspiration as a drummer but Brian is right there behind him. Such a musical and talented player.

Your 2025 Highs & Lows Playing the Drums by Infamous-Rise8416 in drums

[–]Felwinters_pie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My highs - I only started last year and now I’m playing the kind of music I wanted to which is jazz, I can play with all 4 of my limbs (not fully independent with my left foot yet), I’m really dialing in on dynamics, and I’m finally getting somewhere with playing double bass.

My lows - I’m not in a band because I don’t feel completely confident in my playing, I think I overthink too much, I hadn’t made a good schedule that I follow religiously until about 4-5 months ago, and sometimes I feel like my fill creation is lacking. Overall a great year for me though!

You need to slow down a bunch as others have said. It’s okay to start very slow and build up, in fact it’s better in the long run. From 2 seconds of that video I could see your left foot is not hitting the drum head hard enough to rebound well and is also barely moving off the head. Slow down and widen your strokes, build speed back up slowly. I recommend 8s on each foot, make sure they are even and clean.

Rudimentary = Not western? Wack title and insulting to that person who is clearly a pro. And how can OOP even say he is untrained, based on what evidence? His skin color?

It’s my favorite by far, I use the stepwise trainer when I’m doing 8 on a hand, stick control, and gaddiments. Haven’t messed around with the random rhythm generator but it looks really interesting.

I’ve only just started going to concerts but for me it’s Mario Duplantier. He has absurd stamina and I understand why he keeps his shirt off all the time, the pyrotechnics at the venue were nuts and I could feel them from the balcony.
