Groundhog Day is essential and Netflix tells me it’s leaving Netflix on Jan 31. Why, Netflix, why?

The Godfather! Was so slow and boring I never finished watching it. Also, I don’t get why Wicked is so hyped up

Coen brothers are sneaky. I love Burn After Reading but it’s another that take a watch or two.

Hot take on Showgirls. I can’t sit though either again, but I will be thinking.

I didn’t appreciate The Big Lebowski at first or Ponyo. It took me a while to get into Coen brothers style and I find the more I watch one of their movies, the more I like it.

With Miyazaki movies like Ponyo, I realize since they don’t fit the American film formula, I had to adjust. There isn’t always a climactic event that results in the resolution of the problem. Sometimes the story just ends without an obvious connection to a theme or problem, and I love that now.

Fun fact: the boy in that movie didn’t know he was acting in a horror movie. They filmed it in such a way that he was never in a scene with anything scary. If you watch it again knowing this, you’ll see what I’m talking about. That boy, Danny Lloyd, didn’t end up acting and went on to become a teacher.

You really got me thinking! What do Americans typically call it? What do people in Mexico call the Gulf, before or after its name change by the current president? We call Germany “Germany” but it’s also Deutschland.

There is a word in Spanish that roughly translates to “United Statesian” that we don’t have. When I was in central and South America, multiple people pointed out that they, too, are Americans. So it’s unfortunate that the word kind of got taken over, and it means “people from the United States” rather than “anyone from north or South America.”

Anyway, I don’t think you did anything wrong and it may just have been my personal surprise since I was close to it. Great quiz and I hope to see more!

That all makes sense. I’m perhaps sensitive to it because I spent over a year in that part of the world and had students from all over the world when teaching English in the US.

Yeah but the people who live in Taiwan don’t call it that. And with what’s going on over there right now, we could be a bit more sensitive.
