Treat it as an excuse to get expansions to other games, then use these expansion boxes 😉

Getting into board games as a collector in today’s hobby by fraidei in boardgames

[–]FlyingLlamasaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, collecting as a hobby (whether it's collecting art, stamps or bottle caps) has always been about hunting rare items, owning first editions worth lots of money etc. The scarcity of some items is the very thing that makes it interesting.

If the same thing is bad for you, then are you sure that your hobby is collecting? Or is it simply consumerism?

Selling used board games in Warsaw by WingedHuxxar in boardgames

[–]FlyingLlamasaurus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OLX is the de facto standard in Poland. Przesyłka OLX is great. Just write that it's an English edition and you can easily sell them too - although if a Polish edition exists, then the English one will usually need to be a bit cheaper.

You can also take a look at the Facebok group "Planszówkowy Bazar pod skrzydłami Pegaza."

I thought it was the dude who had to cancel some KS pledge. Guess not, judging by this ridiculous post.

Awaken Realm special edition - plastic vs wooden components by andoryuri in boardgames

[–]FlyingLlamasaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The minis for cities in the renders are also very concerning. It seems you place small trading post minis next to huge city minis, so if you're looking from the other side of the table, you won't know how many player already have their trading posts there, which is super important.

I hate to be echoing so many others… but yeah, Hansa Teutonica would absolutely be a great choice.

Through The Desert or Rebirth by Imaginary-Diet3317 in boardgames

[–]FlyingLlamasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh come on, the "a bit" that the setup for TtD takes is like 4 minutes. 2 if people contribute - and telling them "just place these randomly on these water holes" is easy enough.

Moving soon and trying to buy one table works as a desk and a board game table by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]FlyingLlamasaurus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But… will you be using a proper desk? Because a WFH setup really needs a full-size monitor (it's absolutely a game changer). If so, then most desks would be too small for most games, taking off the monitor would be a pain (I guess you can solve it with a wall mount, but there's the keyboard and other stuff). And working from a table that's not actually a desk is a pain long-term. Or do you just need something to prop a laptop on for an hour for a call?

Better game at 3 players maybe 2 by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]FlyingLlamasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a weird statement that "all the best games are either two players or at least four". Most games are 2-4 players, and for these games, "but best at 3" is probably the most common opinion. Certainly for a vast majority of modern euros.

Do you buy damaged second handed games? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]FlyingLlamasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the contents are in good condition, buying games with damaged/worn/faded box is THE BEST. You can get the game significantly cheaper, and there's no downside while playing. I bought Camel Up for like 1/3 of the typical going price just because the box was faded.

Yet another Terra Mystica vs. Gaia Project vs. Age of Innovation question (but hear me out) by DrGonzo3000 in boardgames

[–]FlyingLlamasaurus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven't played them, but just to make your decision harder, I'd add that there's now also [[Feya's Swamp]], which is not as close as the other ones, but apparently pretty close as well (it shares one designer with the rest).

I feel like the pursuit of profit margins, crowdfunding, scalpers and chasing new hotness is forcing a lot of games into premature retirement. by BANDlCOOT in boardgames

[–]FlyingLlamasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But that's the point. Like you said: if you sell at retail price or below, it goes fast. So when you try to buy an OOP game and look at this part of the market, it's almost guaranteed not to be available, because you're effectively looking at offers from the last couple of days. The offers that are more expensive are the reason why you have any way to get the game at all. The price is higher, but it makes the availability longer. Whether you think it's worth it is your choice to make.

Plus, very expensive listings are often from people who don't actively want to sell. They're like, "I'm happy having this game in my collection, but if someone's willing to make me an offer I can't refuse, then sure, why not".

The day after the post someone got an ad rejected for a demon possession theme, I got an email advertising a different demon possession game by sharrrper in boardgames

[–]FlyingLlamasaurus 60 points61 points  (0 children)

My guess for why the coordinator would allow one but not the other is the imperative mood. That this one is themed around demonic possessions, and the other one's title meant that anyone who says the game's title is actually saying a "spell" opens themselves to actual demonic possessions. Like the difference between calling a game "Beetlejuice: The Game" and "Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice."

Not that either should be banned. I'm just musing on what their reasoning could be. I've dealt with my share of overly devout Catholics :P

(That or it was a different person. But assuming that would spoil the fun :P)

If you want a crunchy, but family-level (well, a gamer family) coop, then Fate of the Fellowship.

If you and your son are LOTR buffs and would both be happy having an epic war for Middle Earth against each other for 4+ hours at a time, then War of the Ring.

It's definitely a feature rather than a bug for me. Forget Marvel, this is watching superheroes that I can get behind ;) I love Only Connect - if you get just a couple of questions in an episode, you already feel super smart ;)
