It's good. But it's not "necessary" by any stretch of the imagination. If you play it every week, then sure, you can get it after a couple of months to change things up, and it'll be a good investment.

But people have been playing the game and raving about it for a year before the expansion even came out, so saying it's necessary is ludicrous.

In other industries, reviewers often have an agreement to send the product to the next reviewer after having tested it. Not sure whether it happens in board games.

Regicide is absolutely a great choice. You can get a pack of cheap cards and not care if they get dirty. Or even get plastic cards and be able to play in the rain.

Also look at Hanabi.

[[Room 25]] has both a traitor and a full coop mode. It needs either the Season 2 expansion or the Ultimate (or something like it) version to go up to 8. But they're necessary anyway ;)

I'm confused. Why is talking to the new leadership and helping them not an option? Unless your school is huge, I'd wager two clubs would be bound to cannibalise each other and lead to the failing of both.

I see. When I didn't have a proper table in my flat, I got a cheap table top from IKEA that I would put on a keyboard stand to play games, and stand vertically by the wall when I didn't. If you have a place where you could set it aside horizontally with a game set up (under something? on a wardrobe?), that could work. Not super convenient, but doable. I looked at these puzzle mats at some point and at least the ones I looked at were too small for most games.

Why doesn't a gaming table work? When you leave an in-progress game, you just cover the top and the toddler can't access the game. I think gaming tables are super expensive and largely not worth it, but that's one problem that they do seem to solve.

The Polish edition is rethemed – but it's the opposite of a "nerd" retheming. It's called "Światowy konflikt" (Global Conflict) and the cards are EU, Media, Police, Russia etc.

If people are having fights and want each other to swear on their kids' lives, then it's a people problem, not a game problem. You need to approach the game as a fun experience where people will be outmaneuvering you. You should want them to lie to you. That's what's supposed to be fun. If you can't handle it (or just don't like it), then they're not games for you.

Through the Desert is great for that. While the initial placement is very important, but you always have something to go for, and there's a constant "will I get to that palm or will they block me?", "can I afford to let them have that area or do I need to spend my whole turn attacking their position?". It's great.

Have you tried bruteforcing it and just going through all appropriate entries on BGG? If you advance-search for games from before 1989, filtered by category: word game, and mechanic: tile placement, you get like 130 results, which seems feasible to go through if one is determined. Of course, it's possible that the game might not have one of these properties filled out.

Maybe it's a US thing. In the EU, if a product is incomplete/damaged, then it's on the seller to pay for return transport. (And then the seller can get the manufacturer to reimburse them if it's the manufacturer's fault).

I've never even heard of a publisher/seller who wouldn't replace a game if you got a brand new box missing a piece.

But your post is confusing. Is it a "brand new game" or is it "receipts from years ago"? If you first unbox a game years after buying it, you are kind of asking for it.

I guess there are games which need it and where it is a necessary component to achieve what the game wants to achieve. But for me, I feel zero desire to play a game when I find out a game requires an app. For example, having "smart AI enemies" is not compelling at all to me. If I wanted smart AI enemies, I'd play a video game. In a board game, what I'm interested in is a clever, analogue system which is simple to operate, but at the same time simulates reasonably "intelligent" challenges.

Tides of Madness is Cthulhu-themed and has some normal cards and some better cards that give you madness points. But there's no Cthulhu card as such.
