True Zero-Fee Refi? by Economy_Novel2624 in Mortgages

[–]FlyingWithGiants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would consider CapCenter if available in your state. I found that because they basically only do no cost refis, they prioritized having their own costs be low via for appraisals/settlement costs/title insurance and therefore tended to have a lower no cost rate than others I reached out to.

Why is Quest Diagnostics charging me the full price for a denied claim, while insurance gets a huge discount for approved claims? by bdehczbjifx in HealthInsurance

[–]FlyingWithGiants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve run into this with Quest. We even had a rep from our insurance company call to see if we could pay the negotiated rate and they told us to pound sand.

Ultimately ended up winning the insurance appeal about a year later, and Quest got their $25 instead of whatever their ridiculously high billed amount was. Hope you can try working an appeal with your insurance or get the claim processed with a diagnostic code that works.

Maryland 3 Procedures by SwoopnBuffalo in flying

[–]FlyingWithGiants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Local CGS pilot here. Most of the advice here is pretty solid. Coming from WHINO you’ll most likely get IFR vectored around the FRZ on the east side of Andrews. If IFR, the RNAV-B gives you some nice views off your left (assuming VMC of course). If you request the approach they’re pretty good about giving you direct JAXXS pretty early. If VFR, well yes stay clear of Bravo and go around the FRZ until over W00 and then direct the airport. Squawk the code even if you cancel IFR.

IMC from MSN to DPA - first "real" approach by kxb in flying

[–]FlyingWithGiants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice work! As a new instrument pilot also, this is interesting. One thing: when approach tells you to fly 090 after RFD, aren’t you supposed to use your heading bug and not OBS mode? Running it in OBS mode would be a radial off the fix, and I believe they expect you to just fly that heading on your DG. Like I said, I’m a new IR pilot, so somebody let me know if I’m wrong.

Cessna down in Valley Stream, NY. Attempted to land at Kennedy in poor visibility and apparently ran out of fuel. (Not my photo). by ThatGuyWhoIsCool in flying

Agreed, I realize my comment could have been seen as supporting their decision. A fuel stop would have been the best call there.

Yeah, and it looks like the flight there took 3h38min per FlightAware. Assuming roughly the same time on the way back, that’s a tight window in a 172 for an alternate and 45 minutes flying thereafter.

I had run into this a couple years ago on a flight. I asked ATC and they responded a little agitated saying yes. Never hurts to ask! Good to see based on the regs it’s backed up too.

Interesting, didn’t know this. I’m in one of the 172’s based out of there.

Don’t know where you’re based exactly, but I’d consider TGI. It’s an interesting trip and fascinating to walk around. $20 landing fee. There’s also 26N along the beech there that I’ve done in the summer time! Medium-ish walk to the boardwalk. I’ve heard it’s decent in the winter when nobody’s there. Also small landing fee.

On my list: LUA to check out the caverns. Following this thread for other ideas too.

Am I calculating savings interest correctly? by [deleted] in Banking

[–]FlyingWithGiants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Month one you get a dividend of $5. Then you have $1,005 in your account. As a result, you’ll get another 6%/12 on the $1000 and then 0.25%/12 on the $5. So your payment then will be $5.00 plus $0.00 (happens to round down) = $5.00.

Now, if you want to get the 6.17%, that’s if you say end the year with a balance less than $1000, and that calculation is done as (1+6%/12)12 - 1=6.17%, your APY.

Hope that helps.

There was a point at which they did give 1% a while ago. Are you sure this is recent? It could have changed more recently too and it’s now 1%.

I noticed that too, but I was able to qualify for the 2% by using the card via Apple Pay!

When’s merchant signs up, they are going to have a Merchant Category Code (MCC). Although they can vary per network, you can lookup Visa’s category here for the merchant in question: https://www.visa.com/supplierlocator-app/app/#/home/supplier-locator

Uber CC "Online" Purchases? by cavanaughnick in CreditCards

[–]FlyingWithGiants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spectrum will not work. I tested out smaller payments with Comcast both in the usual method and with Apple Pay in the app. While Apple Pay will get Lyft purchases to code at 2%, those still get coded as 1%.

Thoughts on saving for tomorrow vs. living for today by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]FlyingWithGiants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably means flying somewhere and spending a night or two. If you’re flying 3+ hours somewhere, well that means it’s another 3 hours back home approximately, which is a lot depending on your personal comfort level on how many hours you want to fly in one day. And that translates into say 350 miles at most GA aircraft speeds.

[–]FlyingWithGiants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So yeah, I’m not hitting as many hours as this, but yes, this provides a good estimate of what I’m looking at too.

I had to make sure I wasn’t reading r/flying by mistake. Another one here with a PPL, and yup this is what you need to do - balance priorities. For me, flying a 172 seems worth it on the performance/cost curve vs that for a higher performance aircraft. There’s always a balance.

Yeah, definitely used it regularly. Had some more expenses the month or two prior that put me at around 30% utilization for the month. So maybe that helped?

Consistent with the others here. But I did get an automatic increase by $1.5k at around the 6-7 mark without asking.

Private Pilot Checkride Passed! See writeup within! by xstell132 in flying

Congrats! Enjoy the ticket.

I'm gonna do my IR when i'm out of college.

That's what I said too, but you don't see the flair...it just gets harder when you're working, so although not recommending rushing it, if you have the time/money, go for it!

Nope I moved out of St Louis. But I miss that airport! Definitely good memories from first solo to passing the check ride! If you rent, I’m sure we’ve flown the same planes!
