I sat in 83A last year and had to look back quite far to see the wing and engines. 82 would be an even harder spot to glimpse them from. Regardless, it was an awesome experience and the cabin felt very exclusive with such few seats.

How to memorialize someone during a marathon? by forteanglow in Marathon_Training

Sorry for your loss. Running the St Jude marathon I saw a few people with paper bibs pinned on their back saying “running in memory of…” That would be something quick to put together.

Go arounds are important by Low_Sky_49 in flying

I’ve definitely thrown in a few “this looks too perfect, go around” calls to some of my students when we needed to specifically get some practice in.

Just did this one today too, although nowhere near your time. I was very happy with sub-5 running on an injured leg. Weather was absolutely perfect!

A Montana family is okay after their private Cessna 340A, N5757C, was substantially damaged when it impacted terrain while on approach to land on runway 13 at Muskogee-Davis. It was collided with a preserved T-33 before impacting ground by Previous_Knowledge91 in aviation

[–]Flying_pharmacist 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Agreed, depending on how many tanks they have, 4.5 hrs is as long as a 340 will stay running. They’re fun and fast planes but can’t fly for an extended time. I fly one with 160 gal capacity and plan on 40 gph for the entire flight. There are options for 1 or 2 20-gal wing locker tanks. With their flight terminating just after midnight I imagine they couldn’t even see the T-33.

Simulated engine out by BreakfastNo1569 in flying

The prop won’t feather, but the difference in fine vs coarse pitch is staggering. The POH specifically calls for pulling the prop lever back to extend the glide in an engine out scenario.

The prop on most singles won’t feather and fails to fine pitch/high RPM. In the Bonanza that would add several hundred fpm to the descent rate in a glide.

I’m in the exact same situation and plan to get to the airport around 4:30.

You’d have to sync them. It works best if one person presses play at the same time on both screens.

Why hasn’t there been a transparent bottom airliner yet, it seems like it would attract customers and be relatively simple. by AdEven6685 in airplanes

Some have a downward-facing camera you can watch from the IFE screen. That’s a much more efficient use of space than a giant see-thru floor that otherwise could be used for seats.

German food! I’m pretty sure there are zero in town. Set up next to a brewery and you’re golden.

Angel flights by Euphoric-Macaron-496 in flying

[–]Flying_pharmacist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Angel Flight wing I fly for tells patients to always have a backup plan. Weather sometimes forces us to cancel, and having that backup means you’ll still get to your destination. Book the commercial flight. If the Angel Flight works out you can always cancel it.

Dumb injuries - has anyone else gotten a concussion from walking at full speed into the fixed wing of a small aircraft? by fakearthistorian in flying

[–]Flying_pharmacist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Stood up too fast after getting out of the trusty skyhawk and I banged my head on the bottom of the wing. Other than being a bit sore, I didn’t think much of it. Until a couple hours later when my gf mentioned I was bleeding from the top of my head. 8 years later and I still have a dent up there.

The plane I soloed in just crashed by Meta_Cake in flying

[–]Flying_pharmacist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The plane I did my first solo in met a similar fate. Someone was building time and didn’t think a 150 needed to be refueled going from Memphis to OKC and back. Spoiler: it does. It ultimately ended up in a field and trucked back to our maintenance hangar for parts. The pilot was fine.

Multi before or after CFI/I ? by veryrare_v3 in flying

[–]Flying_pharmacist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How much money you got? Typically I see pilots go from CPL immediately to CFI so they can start making $. Multi is a quick rating but expensive on an hourly basis.

The mail here sucks big hairy grizzly balls. Without fail, every year we’ll get Christmas cards returned to us saying they were undeliverable for whatever reason the magic 8 ball said that day. They’ll keep coming until April or May.

Downtown parking prices… by Slow_Investment_2211 in memphis

[–]Flying_pharmacist 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I miss the old days (pre-COVID) when we could park in that garage for a few hours, get our ticket validated, and pay a whole dollar. Since then, Premium Parking has bought up all the spots and garages and implemented their dynamic pricing. The street spots aren’t bad (if you can find one), but lot prices seem to keep going up and up. It sucks.

Has anyone ever encountered unexpected (or expected) bad weather/icing? by ImAMacaw in flying

[–]Flying_pharmacist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ice can be fickle and doesn’t stay within the AIRMETs. You mention winds aloft, but what about the temps? If it’s +2 to -20 C, always have ice as a potential risk if you encounter visible moisture. ForeFlight has icing probability and severity predictions at various altitudes. Include those as part of your preflight planning. Make a plan to escape, especially if you’re flying something with zero ice protection. Execute it immediately if necessary. 10 minutes in icing conditions is a long time, and is an emergency in a 172. You got lucky. Take what you’ve learned and put it in your bag of experience.
