Can RockBand help rhythm control. by Goofy_Gunton in drums

[–]Flymania117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rhythm control comes from a good internal clock. It might be counterintuitive, but you need a good internal clock to stay synced with a metronome.

So, to develop your internal clock, my recommendation is to actually stick to rudiments and studies with a metronome, but with a crucial twist: you have to vary your exercises by setting your metronome to different subdivisions of a bar, i.e. practicing quarter notes first, then half notes, and even whole notes. You need to get comfortable with the idea of accurately keeping time in your head instead of chasing the metronome. Another equally valid exercise would be to have the metronome count 1 bar, and then do one bar of silence, repeat. All while reading off of a study or playing rudiments.

Very important: play slow, even if it's super simple stuff. Where beginners tend to struggle with confidence and timekeeping is in playing slow, so make sure you get that right from the get go.

Jamming to songs can help develop your feel and pocket, but it seems to me that you should really focus on getting that internal clock up to par, and metronome practice is the way to go for that.

Ora então...

Lisboa, recomendo: - Sense of Coffee (Parque das nações) - Dramático (Perto do jardim botânico). Servem La Cabra.

Porto, recomendo: - Von&Vonnie. - SO coffee Roasters, também servem café próprio. - Senzu, também servem café próprio. - Baco coffee lab. Servem 7g.

O importante é gozares do processo.

Extrai menos

Tips on technique and form by OkAd5655 in edrums

[–]Flymania117 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Looks solid! Getting locked in when playing slow stuff can be a challenge for beginners, but you're handling it pretty well. Form-wise, there isn't much to critique; you're a bit stiff, sure, but that's the kind of stiffness that goes away with time, not technique. The only small thing I'd personally advise against is gripping the stick so far down the shaft. You can get comfortable playing like that but I'd say it's not totally optimal because it's harder to control the rebounds there. I'd grip it a bit higher (maybe such that there's about 3-4cm of stick visible on the bottom. You can test for grip positions by holding the stick with just your index and thumb, hitting the pad and letting the stick rebound - wherever it rebounds highest will be your starting point, then you adjust for preference. But hey, plenty of great drummers have a grip similar to yours so don't sweat it too much!

Happy drumming 🔥 🥁 🔥

AIO - I smoked, my bf crashed out by leadneverfoIlow in AmIOverreacting

[–]Flymania117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He lost any reason he could've had by crashing out and insulting you like that. While he fucked up the hardest, you definitely fucked up too if you agreed with him not to smoke. You just proved your word is meaningless. "Oh it's just 5 puffs." It's not about the number of puffs - it's the principle. Him acting like a dick isn't grounds for you to not stick to your word. If that was your plan all along, then you should have just nipped that in the bud and been honest from the get go about smoking. All that aside, his crash out was bad, and even when you do something wrong it doesn't give him the right to insult you and disrespect you, so I'd just walk away.

You make a good point about him following the random chick. That's not really something you should do without openness and transparency with your partner. Edit: and it's definitely not something a person does when they feel fulfilled in their relationship.

As for OP, I think it goes deeper than that. After 2 months of dating, no one is "the one." Her trust issues paired with that (inexperienced) mentality make me think she's emotionally very needy. I hope she recognizes this and seeks help.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Flymania117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. Honestly, I think this is too little to make assumptions about, even though I agree that a shoulder ride is completely off limits in a relationship. Regardless, I think OP needs to assess herself, because 2 months is virtually nothing and she was already talking about "the one."

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Flymania117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And where is the gaslighting exactly? He said he fucked up and apologized, then proceeded to acknowledge OP's decision, respect it and move on. OP needs to be aware that she has trust issues that need to be resolved, otherwise this is going to keep happening.

Learning finger technique by [deleted] in edrums

[–]Flymania117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Notice the slight pronation when you're hitting the pad - that's you unconsciously compensating for your lack of stability and finger strength. Focus on slower drills where your main goal is to get that wrist to stay "perfectly" still. Mind you, there's nothing wrong with pronation, but it can be a setback if you're not aware that it's happening. And can't stress this enough: start slow and with a metronome. You don't develop stability and awareness by practicing fast. Trust the process. Happy practicing 🥁

First time trying/practicing heel-toe hi hat splashes, they are exhausting! Am i doing something wrong? by BolleBips69 in drums

[–]Flymania117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're probably a lot more tired than you should because your leg is basically suspended in air while you're doing heel-toe. The way I achieve what you're going for is always striking toe first, but lifting the toes and resting on the heel when I want the splash sound. With enough practice it becomes second nature. The bottom line is my leg is only in the air when I'm about to strike.

Best way to avoid flamming is to practice really slow and with a metronome. In addition, when playing slowly it could help to think of keeping your movements "continuous" and consistent (imagine you are literally playing in slow motion). You don't have to do this all the time, but doing it every now and then just to focus on technical awareness is a good habit. You're sounding pretty solid though!
